Permalink Reply by DB on March 12, 2012 at 3:06pm Operation Bullpen by Kevin Nelson is well worth having in one's collectable arsenal.
There is however an issue that seems to arise on the claims associated with a Mickey Mantle Exemplar cited as coming from Greg Marino. That example is part of the operation bullpen website.
Learning Mantle"I had to do it without a kink. You look at how you sign your name and there's a flow to it. There's no stoppage. It's fluid. Everything I did had to have a flow to it, same as Mantle. It had to be fast like he was signing it himself. The angles had to be right. It had to be perfect, and it had to be fast." --Greg Marino, on learning to forge Mantle |

Then an example was posted in the mantle thread regarding a forgery with the excerpt that it was just another in the long line of mantle forgeries...
However Chris Williams indicated that the ball on the left (which aligns to the picture on the right) is in fact, in his opinion not of the Greg Marino vintage. Regardless of how many times I asked he refused to answer the question of the same on the picture on the right.
Zarelli from the UACC added; That's what I always thought and it matches my B&J Collectibles example "below". But it begs the question about the style on the Operation Bullpen web site. Unless one is an earlier rougher style and one is a later improved style but they were both done by Marino.
Incidently, this is one that they both concur is a greg marino forgery;

Since, I own this book I have emailed Kevin 3 times regarding his illustration -vis-a-vis- these claims in essence wanting to know the source of his illustration that he claims to be from Greg Marino.
To date, no response has been received. Nonetheless, if Williams wants to sidestep a direct question even though they are prone to "out" others at the drop of a dime is there perogative. However, an author ought to be able to clairify inaccuracies if there are any. Failing to do so then casts doubts on others.
Me, I'd like to know one way or the other as I like the book.
