My most embarrassing autograph collecting experience.

Feb. '09 I went to the Hollywood collectors show with my friend Mike. We met about 10 celebs that day but my embarrasing moment was with Amber Smith (Actress/ Playboy Model). We purchased some autographs and got some movies and Playboys signed. For an extra $5 she would take a picture with you. We went behind her table with her and she took a nice picture with us. Then she said lets take one more, no smiles this time. When I went to put my arm back around her I accidently slapped her on the butt. She didnt really seem to notice but I was still really embarrassed.

I think it's quite gallant that you felt embarrassed. Rufi, my daughter, works a s a waitress and was quite shocked to discover the number of customers who felt that a proprietary squeeze went with the entree.
My most embarrassing moment was on tour with Whitesnake in 1994. I was at the hotel with David Coverdale while he signed autographs and he signed some of my albums. Whilst he was doing this, I introduced my dad to David. I stepped back whilst my Dad shook his hand and I stepped back hard down on his girlfriend's foot causing her much pain and discomfort!

Not the thing you want to happen when you are on tour with the band for another few weeks and wanted more items to be signed!!

Best wishes,

Richard.
Being on tour with Jeff Beck (as guitar tech to the support artist).

Asking Jeff to sign my guitar backstage on the last night of the 2004 tour and having his tour manager say 'watch out he might be an autograph hunter!... I was embarrassed to say the least, but Jeff laughed and signed the guitar anyway!!
Not sure who will win the most embarrassing moment contest, but when we have a contest for coolest in-person rock'n'roll star, you're definitely in the top 3. Very cool pictures!
Back in the June of 2005, I went to our local radio station and thought i might get Davy Jones autograph. I had my Monkees shirt on and thought i might get in to get his autograph through the front door of the radio station but it was locked. I thought i might get in the back door but it was locked as well. So i tapped on the glass of the radio station while Davy Jones was doing a promotion for his concert that was to take place that evening asking for his autograph. He knodded and gave me the thumbs up. A few minutes later a dj came out and asked me what i wanted signed? I gave her a book for him to sign. He signed it and again gave me the thumbs up. Later that night i went his free concert in our park and thought i might get more items signed. While i was looking at some of his items, our police chief of our town told the person selling the items at the booth that i was at the radio station to get his autograph. The person selling was his daughter and he took off for his vehicle before i could try again. I later found out their was other fans who followed him to his vehicle to get autograph. I guess i was not the only lunatic!
Ahh... the thin line between fan and stalker:)
To begin my story, I will have to give you a little bit of background about my autograph collecting. When I was 16 (years ago in the 1960's), I knew absolutely no fear. My friend, Paula, and I would always go to the one hotel in the city that always hosted celebrities. The bell men knew us - we were notorious for hanging around the hotel lobby patiently waiting. Occasionally, we would get tired of waiting and be so bold as to actually knock on the celebrity's door. We did that with Gardner McKay (remember him?) who promptly scolded us and slammed the door. We met some great people - Nick Adams invited us to dress rehearsal for his play, Edd Byrnes and wife invited us to their suite for cokes and fun conversation, and one of my friends slipped into the waiting limo for the Dave Clark Five and gave them quite a shock when they jumped in.

As a solo act, in 1968, I called Dustin Hoffman's room and told him I was a journalism student (I wasn't) and wanted to interview him. He obliged and I had a great conversation with him and an invitation to ride with he and Paul Simon in their limo to the airport to catch their flight. So as I said, I had no fear.

But I digress. Flash forward to 1984 and yours truly was, much to my surprise, a very restrained 34 year old. My husband's friend, Ralph, called from New York to say he was going to be in our city for the national tour of Camelot with Richard Harris and invited us to the show and for drinks afterwards. It was a dream come true because I was a huge fan of Richard Harris - even had some of his record albums when he was singing Jimmy Webb songs.

So off to Camelot we went, with plans to meet Ralph backstage. Once backstage, Ralph said "Cindy I know what a fan you are of Richard's, so just be patient, he will be up here shortly and you can have him autograph your program." Sure enough, here come's Richard BUT he was surrounded by four very young and very attractive ladies. These women were hanging all over him. Ralph said "There he is, Cindy, go get an autograph."

Well, I was totally embarrassed to even consider going up to him - especially with these ladies surrounding him hanging on to his every word. It was like I would be totally interrupting "the moment" for him. No doubt, they were about to have a wild and crazy evening ahead of them. I just couldn't get the courage up - my head was spinning, I'm thinking "Girl, what happened to you, you have NEVER been afraid to ask anyone for an autograph!" And all this time, I hear Ralph's voice in the background urging me to step forward and get the autograph. It was now or never.

So I took the plunge and walked over to him - I am sure my face was bright red from the embarrassment - good thing the lights were dim backstage. The bevy of beauties parted as I stepped up and said "Mr. Harris, may I have your autograph?" He was very gracious and said "Of course, dear." I handed him my program - hands shaking, I'm sure, and gave him my ballpoint pen. Oh horrors - he started to sign and the pen wasn't working!!! Bad enough I had interrupted him but on top of that, I gave him a defective pen!!!! He turned to his harem and said "Does anyone have a pen that actually works?" One of the ladies came to my rescue with a red marker. Gorgeous ladies always carry red markers, don't they??

Finally! Program signed and all I remember after that is very meekly saying "Thank you, Mr. Harris" and slinking away. You can see from the photo attached, he started to sign with the ballpoint. Forever a reminder to me that I gave Richard Harris a damn defective pen!!!!

Cindy, I love your writing! Why don't you think up some features you might be interested in submitting for the magazine?
My most embarrassing moment had to come a few years ago at the Mellon Mario lemieux Celebrity Golf Tournament in Pittsburg, PA. I had traveled there from Atlanta with some friends of mine and we got to the course at 4am in the morning and set up our chairs on the 18th green to have a up front spot when Michael Jordan came off. If anyone has ever been to that tournament basically you set on h*** 18 all day waiting on everyone to end there game because most celebrities will not sign on the golf course. After and all day wait some of the celebrities start ending there day around 2pm and started signing autographs for fans on the 18th green. I had a sports illustrated of "The Catch" that I wanted Lynn Swann to sign. I had met Mr. Swann a couple of times at the HOF in Canton, Ohio but I collect SI's and I had never got him to sign an SI for me and most of my SI's that are of HOFer's include an inscription of HOF on my magazine. Well because I had met him in the past I new that if he signed he would probably want to personalize all memorabilia and he rarely writes HOF on anything. So I came up with the great idea that when he asked who do I sign this to, that I would ask him to sign it to my nickname and that my nickname was HOF. Well he starts going down the line signing memorabilia and taking his time asking who this is to for everyone who had something nice to get autographed. When he gets to me, he takes my magazine and says who is this to. I said could you sign it to my nickname HOF. He looked down at the magazine and said how do you spell that, I told him HOFand he looked up at me and started laughing and said yea right and Im the Easter Bunny. I stuck with my story that it was my nickname and he asked for my license. I told him I did not have my license on me and he said well you better give a real name if you want this signed. I said ok just sign it to Tim. He signed it to me and looked up at me to hand it back and said nice try you almost got me. I was sooooo embarrassed all my friends were cracking up and I think Lynn thought it was pretty funny also that someone would have the nerve to ask him that. I do have to give Lynn credit he signed for the whole line for a good hour taking his time personalizing and chatting with everyone. he was running for a government position that year also. While alot of the other celebrities including Jordan would only sign a hand full of autographs. I dont think anyone that day that wanted swann did not get him. That was definately the most embarrassing. Sure I have not recognized someone before and called them the wrong name but who has'nt. This one takes the cake for me. Take a look at my photos of my SI signed under attachments. Thanks for reading and thanks to Autograph Magazine for making this site. I Love IT!!!!!!
