I am new to collecting, and shame on me for impulse-buying the Gil Hodges cut signature presented in the image below.

I am trying to verify the authentication but do not understand how. I now know that SportsCard Guaranty is an authentication service, as is James Spence (JSA), both of which are represented on the slab information. Can someone set me straight here?

Got it. The encapsulation itself proves the authentication of the piece, and therefore encapsulated items are not stored in the site's database for validation.
