brandon & sipe were perfect examples of how these lowlifes operate.
Been perusing thru the autograph hell book (will write-up my thoughts on the book blog later) and what appears to give rise to this war is who is the authenticator and what camp do you reside in. As I have seen, as Steve & our Pal louie says "it's about the benjamins" and it is big business. Then we have the entire authentication business that has sprouted up since the 90's that have made impacts good & bad. Add supply and demand and you have a booming forgery business capable of making lots of benjamins.
then comes the independents who are very good in verticle areas - who seem to know their stuff but in some cases to make a name for themselves they will seek out mistakes made by others purely for their own financial gains. Then we have those who claim to be authenticators who either don't exist or are simply a rubber stamp and the forgery business needs to have them authenticated knowing full well it's not real. Contrast this who claim membership to this club, or that club are both a dealer, collector and now soothsayer of what's real & authentic (or so they think). Add to this a bunch of exemplars that have somehow been blessed and the interpretations going on and voila we have what we have today.
Then we have the major TPA's who do just as much good as well as damage that have been accepted by the greater collecting community. Why? the greater collecting community accepts this blindly is another story. Lastly, we have "authenticators" who will make a mistake but by far and away they are the exception and not the norm. Add in for good measure the houses that work hard to present a real authentic item (& they get fooled) to the ones that it's absolutely the reverse (and the consumer gets fooled).
Then we have auction houses that stand silent rather than denounce. Ebay (ok, it's ebay) has a bunch of people on the banned list but they operate freely elsewhere all over the place making thousands upon thousands off of non-authentic items.
Lastly, we have a camp that starts calling out the frauds and all hell breaks loose with the history as well as the individuals involved. SOmeone catches an Error and annoints themselves "the Profound one" in order to zing the one making the error and then it becomes tit for tat or legal allegations threats thrown about when more often than not nothing will come about except to try and silence someone. There is also a sinister camp who don't want to be scrutinized that will allow them to operate freely as "authenticators" when in the final anaylsis as the book took a page out of my playbook, "it is merely an opinionator".
The sinister camp will campaign to smear everyone and anyone not in their camp and hope to wear them down. When someone like Scott says, "I'm done" they will take it out of context and continue to distort and fabricate stories while claiming a victory.
That RE is why there is no laughter and joy in the camps. The independents who are in it for the good of the hobby need to band together while they still can and not throw harpoons at one another as that is exactly whet the sinister camp wants - "divide and conquer". And should that happen who will be left with determining is it real or simply authenticated. "Major" TPAs well that's another story but they also play a major role in the outcome.

The people you know aren't the ones I'm talking about.
Regarding the book Autograph Hell, there's good information and info that's not. It's been years since I read it, but even though I didn't agree with some things, I thought it was a good book. The author Chuck Irion is a great guy and as honest as they come, but in some cases he didn't realize who he was talking to.
Permalink Reply by Brandon Mysinger on September 18, 2011 at 1:53pm I was told that I'm supposedly posting on their site. Thankfully, I'm not. Obviously, they don't know the geography of Tn.
You know, I was thinking though, Todd states that this autograph is real, just mis-identified autograph and the actual signatures are real. Well, isn't that the same thing with the Pawn Stars script?
I refuse to give people like that my time.
Todd could prove to everyone that he is not banned on ebay and list 10 autographs each for a 10 day auction. This should be done under his personal account ( NOT his wife's account ) simply list the items, state that these are being sold by Todd himself. If they don't get kicked, then he will prove that he is not banned on ebay. Remember, Todd claims that the only reason that he does not sell on ebay under his name ( not talking about listing under his wife's name or having other people sell items for him ) is that he hated paying the fees and that he doesn't need ebay.
So, what's 10 autographs to Todd? Why hasn't he done this before instead of trying to explain why he isn't on ebay. His explanations seem so juvenile and foolish anyway. Just prove it! don't hide behind your wife or other people who sell for you. List items under your name.
It seems simple to me. All he has to do is list the autographs, post the item #'s on the ANL site...and we will all see what happens.
BTW, is Travis still stating that Todd sold fake Ali autographs?
