The card also has a signed cut of Ted Williams. I am familiar with the Mick's more well-known autograph, but am no expert in all the nuances of even that signature. And I am unfamiliar with the style that is presented by the cut signature on this card. So I was just wondering if some of the very knowledgable people here believe that the Mantle cut on this card is indeed authentic. It's in an eBay auction. Here is the link and a picture below:

This style is unknown to you because it isn't the Mick. Sorry. Hope this helps.

Ok, that's kind of what I was thinking. It didn't look right to me; that's for sure. But I thought, well maybe I'm just not familiar with it. Anyway, so that's interesting. Not only did Leaf get it wrong, then Beckett went ahead and encapsulated it. Two wrongs certainly didn't make this one right.

I'm really beginning to wonder how many of these 1/1 cards of various different players have been made with forgeries or secretarials. Are some of these card companies even concerned with getting it right, or are they just anxious to get the cards out?

this is authentic.....circa 1953

That is not true. There are three, maybe four, styles of Mantle signatures:

Rookie Era/First Couple of Years:

Then he introduces the looped M's as since in the OP during the mid 1950s

Then during the 1960s he transitions to what is more typical of his common signature, although a bit rough:

Then you finally have his most common signature:

this is no question authentic...this style is from circa 1953

This cut is an authentic Mickey Mantle signature from around 1956... Here is one to compare.

the reason why you are not familiar with this Mantle is that this example is from the 50's.  the M's that we are most familiar with, become part of his signature around 1960.  Here is another authentic example:

Ok, thanks very much to Mike, Ryan, and Terrier for clarifying. As I said, I'm not the most knowledgeable on Mantle. I've seen some sigs of his on older balls, but I don't have great recall on those. While I'm not a total novice on the Mick, I'm definitely lacking. But that's what I love about this site; there's some really well-versed people on here in different areas. I'm still learning a lot and definitely enjoying the process. And now I can have more faith in Leaf and Beckett! Thanks again guys. I appreciate the response.
