My big autograph find - FORREST C. "PHOG" ALLEN signed book!!

This time around, I'm not really looking for authenticity opinions (though you can always chime in with any thought, of course); rather I just wanted to share my excitement about my latest autograph acquisition. A friend of mine in Arizona called me about a book she found available at an estate sale in Scottsdale that she thought I might be interested in, knowing about my love of basketball. The book, "BETTER BASKETBALL - TECHNIQUES, TACTICS, AND TALES", was only $30 and it was signed by the author, FORREST C. "PHOG" ALLEN. She asked if I wanted it, and I replied emphatically, yes, especially at that price.

For those of you that might not be familiar with Phog Allen, he is considered the Father of Basketball Coaching, since he was given the title by none other than his mentor, James Naismith, the inventor of the game of basketball. Naismith not only invented the game, but he also founded one major college basketball program, the one at the University of Kansas (KU). Naismith was employed as either a coach, athletic director, chaplain, or professor at the University of Kansas for 41 years, over half his life. And Naismith is buried in Lawrence, Kansas.

Phog Allen was Naismith's disciple and friend. The Kansas Jayhawks play their basketball games in Phog Allen Fieldhouse. While Naismith invented the game, Allen promoted the game with intense determination. Phog Allen was primarily responsible for getting basketball accepted as an Olympic sport starting in 1936 in Berlin. He also founded the NABC, which started the NCAA Tournament. His impact on the game of basketball was enormous. He won two Helms Foundation National Championships (pre NCAA) and the NCAA Title in 1952 at KU, as well as the USA Gold Medal in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics in basketball.

Recently on EBay a Phog Allen cut signature sold for $349.00 and a 1961 First Day Cover signed by Allen sold for $499.00. The book I received was published in 1937, and he inscribed it to a friend in 1949. The book is in MINT CONDITION. It's awesome, and I got it for $30. I was pretty happy. It's a keepsake, especially for Jayhawk fans.
