Rose Mary Glaser passed away at age 90.  Hap, her nickname,  played for one of the original AAGPBL's teams the Kenosha Comets in 1944.   "She was a pitcher with a mean, stinging ball,” said her sister, Mary Lou Clark of Springfield Township. “Everyone was afraid of Hap’s fastball. She told the coach, ‘My sister can catch them. She does it every night at home.’ So they pulled me from the freshman team to varsity.’’

Batter up! Hear that call!
The time has come for one and all
To play ball.

We’ve got Canadians, Irishmen and Swedes,
We’re all for one, we’re one for all
We’re all Americans!!

Eugene Polley, who developed the first wireless television remote control, was 96-years-old when he died Sunday in Chicago.

Polley was an engineer with Zenith Electronics in 1955 when he built a hand-held box that pointed a beam of light at the television set. The box let viewers change channels and turn the set on and off, alleviating the need to get up to walk to the TV.

Ok, which one of you A. Remember 1955 (and not from your grandfather), B. Had a Zenith  C.  had a flashmatic or D. All of the above.

Grammy Award-winning polka great Eddie Blazonczyk, who began playing the lively music in the 1950s and went on to earn the nickname "Polka King" after starting his own band and label, has died. He was 70.

He was born in Chicago to Polish immigrant parents, and in 1986, his album, “Another Polka Celebration,” won a Grammy award.   Blazonczyk was also awarded a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1998.

Blazonczyk became a polka artist and founded the Chicago-based Bel-Aire Records in 1963, according to the release. Before that, he recorded rockabilly and novelty songs for Mercury and Lucky Four records under the name Eddy Bell.  The best known of Blazonczyk’s pre-polka releases was “the Great Great Pumpkin,” released in 1961. But soon afterward, Lucky Four Records owner Lennie LaCour said Blazonczyk, then 22, should focus instead on polka music

-oh how I remember those weddings and having to dance the polka with aunts...1,2,3,   1,2,3

Janet Carroll, who played the mother of Tom Cruise's character in the 1983 film "Risky Business," has died. She was 71.

Born in Chicago, the classically-trained actress worked steadily since that breakthrough role with Cruise in 1983. Her film credits include "Family Business," with Sean Connery and Matthew Broderick, and "Memories of Me" with Billy Crystal.  Her television roles included stints on "Murphy Brown," "Melrose Place" and "Married with Children." She also made appearances on "Brothers and Sisters," "Law & Order: SVU," "Touched by an Angel," "Knight Rider," "Matlock" and "21 Jump Street."  Carroll served as artistic director of the jazz series at the Simi Valley Cultural Center in Southern California for many years and performed on tour with the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band.

For those who watched Married with Children, you might remember Gary's shoe store (where AL worked).where Al thought it would be good to have more men's shoes since gary was a male.  Then Janet showed up in one momentous encounter....

Sandy Dahl, 52, became one of the faces of the grieving 9/11 families, founding a scholarship in the name of her husband, Jason, and giving public speeches to ensure the memories of those lost were not forgotten.

Officials at the Captain Jason M Dahl Scholarship Fund said she died in her sleep from natural causes at her home near Denver, Colorado, on Friday night.

Captain Dahl became a hero after he and passengers on United Flight 93 fought back against hijackers who seized the plane. It came down in rural Pennsylvania with the loss of all 40 on board but no casualties on the ground. It is thought the terrorists had been planning to fly into the White House.

having made contributions to the planned memorial of flight 93 this death is heartfelt.
