Hi All,

I ran into this, my list of things to think about when considering an autograph purchase, while adding to a Bowie thread - and I thought it might be of use so I post it here. It is certainly not complete by any means.

In no order here are some things I think about:

Original/virgin /untrimmed photo/item (no tape, folds spots, restoration etc – considering item/age/other factors)?

Vintage as possible?

Is the autograph contemporary to the item/photograph or added later?

Best condition possible (considering above etc.)?

Best quality photo (1st generation/original release/candid)/”Official” item”/product (album, CD, ticket, promo, key photo etc.)?

Best inscription (if any possible)/dedication/dated?

Fountain, ballpoint or fiber/felt? Pencil?

Optimal contrast/placement? Ink color clash with item/image?

Clear example/preferably no smudging from signing/fading/etc.?

What else can I buy with this amount of $?

Recent auction/sale results for like material?

Is the signature interesting/unusual/unique without the photo/item?

Frequency of items with comparable presentation?

Comparison to similar for quality - mediocre or exceptional?

How does this fit in with other items I have collected using similar criterion? Display?

It the item is too big? Small? Is the autograph lost or overpowering?

Best wishes,

All good and valid points, Eric. My method is a bit more simpler than most. It's based on three factors.

1. Is the autograph authentic.

2. Does it appeal to me personally.

3. Most of all, does it fit my budget.

I like vintage items to look vintage and don't mind a few flaws.

I always believe that if I follow the above three simple rules, if or when, I decide to sell it, I will get my money back or make a few dollars. Hopefully, I will find that one collector who values it as much or more than me.

Autograph collecting is a hobby first, enjoy yourself and the rest will take care of itself.

Hi Joe,

Indeed, those are the first three, great additions, and I take them as a given. I hope I am not looking at forgeries I don't like and can't afford! ;)

Eric

LOL! Most of the time I LOVE what I can't afford!! But, it gives me something to strive for. Sell something and add a few of my own dollars. Bingo! My collection grows.

Bump for additional thoughts/additions :)

Eric
