Of all the Mantle signatures that I have seen, whether in person, in a publication or on the internet, there is always a little "glich" that I noticed, and only on the authentic signatures. I have only seen two signatures that did not have this certain quality. One was a known fake, and the other is this one that we are speaking of.

What's strange is that the signature appears to be perfect otherwise. I'm not saying that it is, or is not authentic. I'm only presenting to you something that I see in other genuine Mantle auto's that does not appear in this one. Take a ruler, or sheet of paper, anything with a straight edge, and lay it under "Mickey" as if you were going to draw a line across the bottom of the letters, just touching them. Now look at the last name. "Mantle" should not be on the same plane, but about 1/8th of an inch above it. Every Mantle auto that I have ever seen is like that, and it's real easy to see if you know about it. The "Mantle" is always a little higher than the "Mickey." It's almost as if Mantle was putting in an "automatic authentication device." Like I said earlier, the only one that I saw that wasn't like this was a known fake. This one is like that, also, and it looks so damn good that I hope that I'm wrong.

One thing about Mantle is you can get too carried away by over-analyzing certain things. You can't focus on ONE letter, or just the baseline, or Mickey being 1/8th of an inch higher than Mantle always...

Eventually you just get a "feel" for a person's signature, and then even when something is atypical, you can still tell it's authentic or not. As I said earlier, the Mantle originally posted is textbook Mantle no question authentic. Perhaps I had a better image, or my screen is better, but it was easy to tell.

For example we always discuss how some forgeries "Mickey" looks like "Milkey", here is an AUTHENTIC ball, where the "c" definitely looks like an "l":
