Condition, Condition, Condition. I had fun, but way too much pressure.

Cards are fun to collect especially the vintage cards.
To me its a part of history.  New cards are so mass produced and everybody who collects them tries their damnedest to keep them pristine.  So in the future they will never be worth what older cards are worth.  Kids would actually play with their Mickey Mantle cards like toys.  If they only knew now right.

Nice article....good read.

Thank you, Eric, for your thoughtful response. Very good point about the cards being like toys. We played with them.

I didnt care about condition when I was collecting. otherwise I wouldn't have flung them against a wall to knock down "leaners".

You can get some real bargains in off condition. I remember leaners against the schoolyard door in grade school.

I collect baseball cards pretty hardcore, but there is a new age of "collectors" upon us, and that is the "Graded/Slabbed/Prospect" collectors... Over on my card site it seems all people care about is slabbed/graded/prospect autographs from Bowman/Bowman Chrome. It's insane.

For example, Kris Bryant Bowman Chrome autos are going for $250+; the kid has never played an MLB game yet. Yet established players like Jose Bautista/Jeff Smardzija you can get their first Bowman Chrome auto for $20. INSANITY folks! I could care less about a "grade" and I hate slabs!

I buy some slabs.  I try to keep it psa 10 or bgs 9.5 10. I do not send cards in to get slabbed though.  I will look for a deal or two on slabbed cards.

I believe Mr. Seideman is this generation's T.S. O'Connell.
