The Authentic Experience
I was so sad to hear that Whitney Houston passed away. In recent years, when I heard or saw Houston I thought of Billie Holiday, who died at only 44 due to the effects of drug addiction. An addiction that also stemmed from her relationship with her partner, as did Houston's from Bobby Brown. It breaks my heart that my fears about her came true.
As fans and autograph collectors, celebrities live on through our stories of meeting them and their autographs.
Did you ever meet Whitney Houston?
Do you have her autograph?
Please tell your story. Celebrate her life.
Thanks

Permalink Reply by mike aring on February 23, 2012 at 9:57am back when i was working on movies and commercials in the arizona area, i found myself working on "Waiting to Exhale." about an hour into my second day, Whitney showed up on set (albeit very early for her)...i was talking to some people on set and when she approached us, the people i was chatting with all started to walk away, leaving me alone with her by the craft service cart. We had a short conversation about food and some other things. i was quite young (being about 20-21) and she asked me if I was married or had any kids (i said no)... and in all honesty, i thought she was hitting on me (as all guys usually do when a woman walks up to them and just starts talking).
about 10-15 minutes later, while walking past her trailer, i heard her YELLING at someone.. and i mean screaming!!! and the yelling went something like this "i thought this was an all black crew? I thought we were giving jobs to JUST black people! what is he doing here?"
and, inevitably, the production coordinator (my boss) called me into the production office, to basically tell me that it wasn't working out and i had to go. he gave me $1000 cash, and i was on my way, never to come back.
while walking to my car, some kids approached whitney for an autograph and she yelled at them too. we were shooting at a hotel that day (the Arizona Biltmore). but sad to say, whitney ruined my first movie... and it was a race thing!!!!
ok, so appararently, and this one if for you steve cyrkin... our buddy, mike medlin (red bull) got whitney the day before she died (might have been 2 days).. and not only 1 autograph, but he personally got 2 from her!!! doggone it!
Permalink Reply by CEE GEE on February 23, 2012 at 10:24am Now that is an entertaining story Mike...WOW...1000 bucks would have been fine for me...She was train wreck anyway despite her few years of hits...
Permalink Reply by mike aring on February 23, 2012 at 10:30am well, it wasn't much, i was only a production assistant anyway.. but in AZ, i would have gotten $100 a day (this was my second day on the movie.) but i would have been on for over 100 days anyway. but i did get some other work that paid better DURING the time that i should have been working on the movie.
if i explain myself better, you get paid better for the exact same work on a commercial than you do on a movie. at the time, a P.A. in Arizona got $150 + for a commercial, music video etc... while on a movie, you get about $100 (sometimes less) a day. so $1000 was really to shut me up.. because that's racial to have me fired from an all black set - or to not let me work because the set was all black... but it happens all the time.
