The Authentic Experience

Permalink Reply by mike aring on December 4, 2011 at 10:28am yep, favre doesn't sign for free (for the most part)..Neither does brady (again, mood can make him sign every once in a blue moon should he get a wild hair)... manning is much nicer, still tough though and usually puts a personalization THROUGH his autograph. i've gotten favre ONCE for free... the year he won his first mvp.
I think Peyton was charging about $200 minimum at his last public signing.
Permalink Reply by mike aring on December 4, 2011 at 10:35am yeah, but peyton signs for free too... if people would stop paying these ridiculous prices for people. they'd stop charging it!
Heard he's really nice when you meet him. I actually got two Peyton's through the mail his rookie year, though it took several months.
Permalink Reply by mike aring on December 4, 2011 at 11:12am he's not "Really nice." but he does do it. still does.. the other guys... Brady, Favre, Rodgers.. they all are not! and they are all equally abrasive if you get the chance. Now Roethlisberger, he is extremely nice (his buddies/bodyguards are not but ben is!)
Permalink Reply by Steve Cyrkin on December 4, 2011 at 11:17am I checked out sportsmemorabilia.com, which is a consignment site that carries everything from obvious forgeries to quality material by PSA/DNA, JSA and Steiner. The cheapest Rogers was $138. Everything else was $170+ (including lots of iffy looking GAIs for $179-$199), with JSA certified signed photos starting at $219.
You can pick off a bargain here and there from people who don't know what they have, but I can't understand why a legit dealer selling a genuine one for $89.
Yeah, Favre was always a jerk to his fans, except when there was some sort of PR motive. I'm hearing that Rodgers is ok at his signings, but doesn't say a whole lot and isn't exactly warm.
Permalink Reply by mike aring on December 4, 2011 at 11:53am i have no idea what these people are like at signings since i don't really pay for autographs.. i pay a lot more with my time and energy than i ever will in physical cash. rodgers was TOUGH in college, so i can't imagine him being much nicer in the pros. usually, they get worse, not better. favre was nice when he was with the falcons (which i got him quite a bit when he lectured us on how to pronounce his name) but once he was MVP that first time, he became a total jerk and a liar (go back to our 10 best/worst signers in sports list that i helped concult on a few years ago).
as for selling rodgers for $89... well, these guy sign so much at these signings, in defense for selling something cheaply. what does Drew Brees sell for at shows from people who have done signings with him? Cause i almost can't GIVE HIS AUTOGRAPH AWAY- even PSA DNA certed. and he has a better signature than rodgers. i only have a few rodgers (and if they are packers pics, they are draft day shots of him holding up his jersey at the draft.).... and i'd gladly sell em for $89 each.
Not that Rodgers is super complex, but some forgers kinda get it right . . . sort of. This looks ok to most fans with limited knowledge of his signature, as you can see by the bidding.
There are the two dead givaeaways:
1) That's not how he signs that inscription.
2) Crap COA. That photo is from a rare public signing 2 - 3 years ago. Yet there's a SB 45 inscription.

I thought you might find this interesting in your quest collecting information on 3rd party authenticators.
It is common knowledge that autograph dealer Steve Koschal writes the Autograph Alert website. Last year, on July 24th, he wrote: "[Who'd be] foolish enough to spend money to have some high profile authenticator look at it and declare your item is not genuine. This happens very often, especially with some of the incompetent authenticators used by eBay." Followed on September 15th with: "Who has any respect for most autographs being offered on eBay? By this time everyone should be aware that eBay uses the high profile 3rd party authenticating companies. Look at the mess that has been created."
So, on his Autograph Alert website, Stephen R. Koschal slams 3rd party authenticating companies as incompetent.
On his current Stephen Koschal website, he writes, "Our autograph authentication service is the choice of many of the high profile authentication services. While in their office when they are unable to come to a conclusion and need a professional researcher, for a professional opinion, they contact Stephen Koschal. When they are physically at an auction house and just don't know, they contact Stephen Koschal directly from the auction house."
