Melvin L. Bashore replied to Michael's discussion Is this Jack Nicklaus signed photo real
"My guess--and it's just a guess--is that the signature very much resembles a 1961 newspaper sports cartoon that he signed for me in the mid-1990s (see attached). When I sent him another sports cartoon to sign about a year later, he wrote that…"

Melvin L. Bashore replied to Michael Breland's discussion Walter Payton autograph authentic? World Class Autographs COA
"I would say it looks similar to 2 items that Payton signed for me TTM in about 1990, but I'm not an authenticator. The flourishes in his signature probably varied somewhat each time he signed. I will attach my two examples."

Melvin L. Bashore replied to jslaterw's discussion Bart Starr Authentication Question
"I began writing to him in Dec. 1988, and received several autographs from him from then thru the early 1990s. I will attach some of them so you can compare with your helmet signature. My experience at that time was that he was a most willing signer.…"

Melvin L. Bashore replied to Joshua Y's discussion Does this Rabbit Maranville signature look legit?
"I'm not an expert by any means, but the signature you have seems to measure up to his WWI and WWII draft registration signatures (see attached) quite nicely."

Melvin L. Bashore replied to Paul Stabile's discussion 2002 US Senior Open Championship mystery autograph
"I'm pretty sure that is Gary Player. I've had him sign many items when he was playing at senior events where I was volunteering in the mid-to-late 1990s in Park City, Utah. See attached for some examples of his in-person signatures. I…"

Melvin L. Bashore replied to Steverino's discussion ARNOLD PALMER - Real or Secretarial?
"Attached are 2 Palmer autographs that I got from him TTM about 25 years ago. One is on a 1961 newspaper sports cartoon and the other is on a yellow 3x5 card. I also have a couple of other autographs that he signed for me in person when I was…"

Melvin L. Bashore replied to David Brewer's discussion I'm going to invest in a Maurice Richard autograph.
"In the 1990s, I sent him a 3x5 to autograph (which is at my summer house), but I have two autographed postcards that he also sent me here at our winter home which you might view (see attached). Can't really tell you what to look for in fakes…"

Melvin L. Bashore replied to Ben Middleton's discussion Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourn
"The 1870 Census indicated that he couldn't write, but he could read. He was 14 in 1870--and his next youngest brother, age 13, could both read and write--and was attending school, but Charles wasn't in 1870. So you may very well be right…"

What would you like to tell us about yourself, your collecting, or business.
I have been collecting for over 30 years, principally through the mail, but also in person. I specialize in obtaining sports autographs on old sports newspaper cartoons, having undoubtedly the largest collection in existence. My collection is very unique in that regard. I have over 2000 football autographs, 99.9% dating to those who played in the 1920s thru 1960. But I also have that many vintage autographs in all other sports. I have websites featuring my collections of football, baseball, tennis, golf, track & field, basketball, and an items-for-sale site.
What is your level of expertise?
Advanced Collector, Expert
