Another Autograph Lawsuit -- The Security of the Venue Edition

I wrote about the story back when Christina Grimmie of “The Voice” was shot at an Orlando venue after a concert, while she was signing autographs for fans. The latest is that her family is suing the promotional company and venue where she was killed. I find it hard to believe that AEG Live or the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Plaza Foundation, which owns the venue, will lose this suit. When somebody brings a gun and kills somebody, it’s rarely a case of poor security measures.

Heavy metal guitarist Dimebag Darrell of Pantera, was shot while on stage (the same day Lennon was murdered decades earlier). That venue didn’t lose a lawsuit.

When that nutjob went into the Batman screening at midnight and shot up the theatre, they weren’t liable either. And they shouldn’t be considered negligent. Movie theatres are checking to see that we don’t bring in Red Vines or soda we brought from home. They’re not doing complete body scans on folks and making them take of their shoes like they’re at the airport.

Grimmie was on the third season of The Voice, and her videos on YouTube garnered millions of views. The guy that killed her had been stalking her, and he did us all a favor by at least killing himself.

But as I’ve said about people that want to bug the celebrities with selfies now instead of autographs...this is yet another thing that’s going to have to make musicians think twice. And that’s a shame; because the huge bands will still do their meet-and-greets, in which they charge an exorbitant amount of money to attend. The best for fans of the classic rock bands I love, is that a lot of times they’ll play smaller venues, and come out to the merch booth afterwards to sign autographs. I gave my friend Jennifer crap because when Nancy Sinatra did that after a show, she was charging $5 for her new CD. She didn’t buy one, but brought a bunch of other items (which she gladly signed). I brought one album, and had her sign that and the new CD I purchased. Again, the logic being...they do this to sell their new product. If you show up with a bunch of old albums, it doesn’t give them much incentive to come out and sign autographs in the future. Especially if their life could be in danger.
