Autograph Magazine Live!

The Authentic Experience

Just came across this being promoted on Autograph Alert.

http://www.autographquarterly.com/

Not long after Autograph Magazine changed to mostly online someone else is already attempting to take it's place as the autograph industry's "only print magazine."

Thoughts anyone?

Best,
Tricia

right you are herman as I stopped counting after page 27...

although they indicate it's "5 free" quick opinions it requires a subscription thus is it really free or merely a gimmick to entice "subscribers"?  The other part is that if the results are inconclusive there will be a reason for it.  That's nice depending on how it works getting away from the "check box" mentality.  The timeline of no less than 48 hours does put some pressure on to deliver.

since they are "calling all experts" maybe they will consider you this time around.

I received Volume I Issue 4 on Tuesday, March 13th with four 2012 issues expected in the next nine months. Actually, DB, Rich Altman's James Bond dissertation is 37 pages long from pages 20-56. The "block" style - "square binding" -  so it can "sit" on a bookshelf is a good idea, but not really helpful when you are looking for an issue because the the Volume/Issue number is not on the spine. If AQ doesn't list the names and qualifications of each of their Seal of Approval experts on their AQ website, it will just be a repetition of the recently shut-down website which frequently published statements beginning "We have shown the signature to experts and they all agree that..." With each opinion, the names of the experts giving each opinion must be listed or, at the very least, the names of all the experts on the panel (as done by PSA/DNA) or the name of the person taking responsibility for the opinion (as done by James Spence).

well, the 4th edition finally arrived (Herman, did you get yours yet?) albeit 3 - 6 months late depending on whose counting.   I don't really like the "block" style as it makes me think I'm reading a term paper. Several of the illustrations are very poorly "typeset" especially the Koschal Article on Apollo XI.

If you take out the 27 pages of Rich Altmans dissertation it's a rather small magazine.

Nelson's article on Lady Gaga and her various styles are interesint and so very varied.  Good luck on figuring out which ones are real if you didn't get it in person.   Brian Green's Jefferson Davis and Todd Mueller's contribution on Bettie Page were also interesting.

One area though of concern is they are now talking about an AQ Seal of Approval given out to "dealers" who are annointed by some anonymous set of some 20+ experts agree that they predominantly sell authentic material.  This "AQ Seal" will be reviewed by these anonymous experts who will review the "dealers inventory" every 6 months.  .    Part of me says, "this is a good thing" but the cynic part goes "what the hell?".   The experts aren't identified, there are also legal implications right back to good Ole Sam (That might be a way to find out who he really is!), and we have unnamed experts who are going to review dealer inventories all the while the "publisher" struggles to get out a magazine.

Then the additional note of going after EBAY and the "millions of forgeries" they have sold and are now going to be made accountable by providing AQs version of quick opinions for subscribers.  Now that could be feasible especially where they state, "there will be a minimum of 4 experts on the panel" that the item will be submitted to but I wonder if the "panel" opining will be named or not.

If presumption here is that you are looking for a reimbursement.

You only have some many days to file a dispute within paypal Herman.  If you have not received a response then one might want to file a dispute.  As you know they will let you know when it needs to be escalated to a claim should a reimbursement not be offered.

Still waiting for 2011 issue 4. On February 14, 2012, my subscription to Autograph Quarterly was automatically renewed for $24.95 from my PayPal balance.  The PayPal Details noted: "Merchant Name: Autograph Quarterly - Merchant Email: questions@AutographQuarterly.com"  I Emailed. Still awaiting reply.

I read this as nothing but a nice big cover-up to protect them from subscribers who are going to be looking for their $. They already owe all of the subscribers refunds if the subscribers choose since they in essence didn't produce a product in the agreed upon time.

Old Sammy E X made it clear that he is losing money. So it will hurt when he has to refund people from his pockets. Especially if he is Kevin Martin ( which a few people on the dark side have let slip is true).

However, I suspect that they will ship a 4th pamphlet ( its not a magazine ). Get the Utomatic renewal $ then refund it. At last letting the xerox machines rest from the horrible product they spit out.

Unless they are doing a major investigation into the PAAS ( Mike Frost ) / Robert Jones situation that's brewing. That would be a pamphlet I would gladly buy.

This just in;  Looks like the 4th one has been significantly delayed and pehraps in turn the new subscriptions for the 2nd year.  You might also take notice of the "automatic renewal" indicated below.  When you originally took out a subscription there was an "automatic flag" set to renew the subscription.  If you didn't shut the flag off a renewal triggered.

I’m pleased to report that the newly formatted magazine is finished and on its way to me from the printers as I type this message.  I bounced it back to them after a format issue that has since been corrected.  It will be in everyone’s hands within the next few weeks.  If you’ve not received your copy by the first of the month, by all means contact me and I’ll be happy to refund you for the issue you’ve not received as well as the renewal if it was automatically processed.

With my best,
Victoria

The only reason I have a copy is because I like having a physical magazine to read instead of online! But I have to say that out of 3 issues I have not had an article that caught my attention yet! Who careas about 1800's writers autographs, what about rock stars of today and celebrities of today, not Babe Ruth everyone does Babe Ruth studies and if you are a true autograph collector you have already read about the bambinos signing habots and exemplars. With that said I will not be renewing my subscription. We need Autograph Magazine back with in person scoops, addresses, and awesome interviews. Not James Bond book authors!!!! I think we should start a petition to get AM back if it is just 4 issues a year it will blow AQ away.

Until next time KEEP GRAPHIN!!!!!!!

not that it should be a surprise, surprise, surprise but here we have this "unknown" and "secretive editor" who doesn't come up in any of the intell sources and most likely doesn't exist under who he says he is.  He seems to enjoy cloak and mirrors, and his pals who go by all sorts of aliases like Pogo the Clown and The Insane Clown Posse that would be a good moniker for them are just that...

So this Xides which I submit doesn't really exist starts making the following libel attacks on someone who may not be perfect but frankly is leagues above these scumbuckets....  Sorry Tirica as I was hoping it would be a "good thing" but some people here hit this nail right on the head....

From SXIDAS;
and I quote;  As a publisher I was adding a blog to my site  when it occurred to me that it made more sense to come here among fellow collectors.  Afterall, I am the one financing the magazine that naturally after only issue ONE is still in the red !  So - lets have some fun constructive comments on here to me anyway dont get me wrong its VERY needed to expose and keep exposing the black hats who have already damaged this hobby so much they ALL need to be removed....Im all for it and an open honest forum like this will help that go even faster which is why in issue TWO I made the decision to plug this site in my magazine !

Best Samuel X

then he "allegedly" attacks Cyrkin, Autograph Magazine (which was a great publication) and pretty much everyone on this site;

I dont know what makes people turn to the dark side as you said and I cant imagine in the old publishers case what happened...I think he is a sad person who wanted to belong so to speak like back in High School years but also like in High School years he picked the wrong crowd to hang out with he was probabaly impressed by certain peoples catalogs and images and I am sure some of the bad guys do make a lot of money being bad guys - bad guyes usually do - but thats only for a season and will surely come to an end for them. As for Cyrkin I dont know the man personally but take Hollywood Show for example I do know these people as I met many of you new subscribers when we unveiled issue one at their show in Feb the two owners of the show told me they asked nay Begged Cyrkin to exhibit and show Autograph magazine at the show and he never would !??? I also know some of our best contributing writers so far have expressed to me privately that Cyrkin also refused their articles when submitted ! If I didn tknow any better its like he wanted to fail as spectacularly as he has...?? Very odd situation but the positive is the hobby now has a magazine that hopefully we can all be proud of - I know I am ! and I CARE deeply about the hobby and everyone in it which I hope will show with each additional issue
Thanks for all the great comments keep em coming they dont pay the rent as they say but they sure soften the blow until this thing can pay for itself !!! Samuel X.

Well the 1st issue has been out for awhile and  except for a couple of issues and the overkill on 3rd parties with mostly vague references to "facts" or in their mind.  It seemed ok.

Of course it was just a matter of time until A/Alert sent something out about it and yet again has to take a slap at AM, "We’ve almost given up a few years ago thinking that this hobby would not have a magazine that we could all look forward to. One with educational articles covering many subject matters and especially one who would not take advertisements from criminal types. One advertiser actually spent time in prison for an autograph related incident. Many innocent readers have been hurt by trusting some advertisers in the old magazine."

Speaking of which, I found AM outstanding which is why I had multiple 3 year subscriptions.

But back to AQ;  doesn't the first issue have Richard McCallum as an advertiser and one other one has a Heston that looks to be of the secretarial "Dbl L" brand....

After spending way too much time here lately I did notice their seciton on Autographs and footnoted that they were Authentic or In-Person but did not identify the source.    I can't recall if AM did that or not but after pondering - the source ought to be identified so we can tell just how authentic.  Recall for years, although some seemed to know better, the CHALL was "authentic".

The other thing that would be helpful is if they put titles on the pictures so we know who we are looking at.  I am sure the presentation will improve with more professional usage of "word processing software" and as much as I like online, I line hard copies just as much.
