The Authentic Experience

There have been some fun Beatles interviews in the news lately. Check out Paul McCartney's interview with Karen Price at the WalesOnline site... Some nice quotes about fans and autographs...

“I kind of ignore it,” he [Paul McCartney] says of fame.

“The minute mega fame hit with The Beatles I thought, ‘I won’t let it change me.’ I made a real effort. If I want to go on the bus or the Tube or something I will. I don’t go round with a huge entourage. It’s either me, or me and my girlfriend, or me and my kids. I think that helps. I treat it as if it (fame) wasn’t there.

“This morning I was on my own off running in the woods. That’s me how I always was – the Paul I’ve known since I can remember. People say, ‘You can’t go to the cinema or shopping.’ Of course you can. I go and stand in the queue like anyone and get tickets and popcorn. People recognise me but they don’t go crazy.

“Most people understand you’re out there just being yourself and they kind of like that. I like people coming up to chat – it’s quite nice.

“Sometimes if I’m in the middle of a meal and someone comes up for an autograph I just say, ‘I hope you don’t mind this is my night off. I know you understand.’ And most people say, ‘Of course.’ When I’m on tour it’s a different thing – then you do the autographs.”

Also, Ringo Starr recently tried to explain his 2008 announcement that he would no longer answer fan mail in a BBC interview:

Speaking to BBC Radio 2 last April, Starr said he had become aware that fans "were making money" from his name.

"I was signing and then they were on eBay the next day. So I just decided, I think I've done my share. That's it."

Starr told Sir Terry Wogan he had written "millions" of autographs before imposing the ban, and he had been surprised by the reaction to his announcement.

"I honestly didn't think it was going to be world news - BBC and CNN," he laughed.

I agree,Mr Starkeys ego is so way out of control. If I were to see him,I would not even consider asking him for any kind of favor knowing you would most likely get some kind of nasty comment or gesture or get yelled at!Pete Best would never treat a fan in this manner!

Anyone who believes what Ringo is shoveling still believes in the tooth fairy. Ringo has been RUDE for years. He, like so many, dance to one tune at interviews, and flip to another song when on the streets. He is in L.A. quite often and instead of simply politelly saying no, he makes gestures, insinuations, and comments all the while saying no. I have a about 4 sigs by him, and it was VERY difficult. For me, he is no longer even worth the effort. His ego is way out of control.

I worked at a vintage guitar store (Pete's Guitar) in the 80's and early 90's that sold guitars to people like George Harrison. Pete traveled to Japan for the Harrison/Clapton tour as the guest of George's guitar tech. Backstage at one of the shows Pete waited patiently while George signed autograph after autograph for the Japanese guests. George turned to Pete and said, "I'd like to find the person who invented that word (autograph)". Pete was worried because he also wanted an autograph. George obliged by signing the programs that Pete had - one for Pete and one for me.

Loved the McCartney bit. Ringo is old news, but it's worth mentioning: he's full of crap. He told Howard Stern, years before announcing he'd stop doing autographs in the mail, that he never signs autographs in person and doesn't see the point. Howard even told him all the ways he could do it and save time, and how sometimes it's real fans, not just eBay people. Starr was having none of it, and called autographs seekers idiots.
