The Authentic Experience

Last weekend, while in Asheville, North Carolina a few days, I attended my first Roller Derby competition. The movie, Whip It piqued my interest in checking out what looked like a fun and entertaining time. And it was, especially as the home team Blue Ridge Rollergirls, a fourth year team full of enthusiastic and skilled skaters, clobbered their competition, ROCK (Rollergirls of Central Kentucky) by a huge margin. A very huge margin. The bout also drew twice as many fans as expected for their season opener -- 2,700.

With the link below, check out a few details of the contest which included a fight and ejection, and sadly an injury to one of the home team girls. And be sure to check out the Gallery page for the names and images of the team, and the team logo. Cute.

I didn’t secure any autographs that evening - which is very unlike me - but I spotted several young children with parents who did. And if I had, I would have been the oldest person there trying to do so.

I did take pictures, so check out three of the images I captured during the break between the two bout periods - of Blue Ridge Rollergirl Sugar Magmaulya autographing the pant leg of a child fan, Caslamity Jane sitting on the sideline and two members of the ROCK waiting for the break to end.

There is a great time to be had by the young and old at these competitions. But now back in New York City and unable to attend any of their bouts again, I wish the BRRG great success and hope they draw even more fans the rest of the season. MR
