I know this isn't autograph related so I'll keep it short and hope I don't open a whole can of worms but since it IS on the issue of fake crap being passed off as original I thought it prudent to pass it along. What never ceases to amaze me is that these charlatians passing off this junk never do their homework. Sharp  eyes always catch something askew. Take for instance this " Concentration camp uniform". I've collected militaria since I was a kid and learned from my father who was a major collector of WWII militaria. In all that time I have seen less than five camp uniforms. two in museums, two at shows and one in private hands. Only the one in private hands can i be sure was genuine and only because of its provinance. This seller CADETCOM contridicts himself several places. And not just on this item, I looked at his other pieces and not only is his command of the english language shall we say "lacking" which leads me to believe he is not located CONUS ( he does NOT list where he is ) but he describes everything he sells is "rare" even when its not. He uses descriptions that have nothing to do with the item ( such as a "rare" US Marine pilot ring ) It's not rare, I have two in my collection. There is no indication that it was a pilots? It has nothing to do with Kreigsmarine ( means German navy ) or U Boats?  Perhaps it's belonged to a German flying U boats for the US Marines! lol. Anyway back to the uniform.  The seller CADETCOM titles this "  GERMAN WW2 complete PRISONERS UNIFORM fr. DACHAU, BUCHENWALD, AUSCHWITZ camp"  Well which camp is it from? ( He states later Auschwitz so why mention the others? ) He atributes this uniform to prisoner #64517 Isidor Müller. ( This information is easily available on the net ) he further states "What I am about to describe is an awesome rare rare rare complete uniform that appears to have been a political prisoner from Poland based upon the upside down red triangle" ( Did he say rare? lol ) "Appears"? He gives documentation as a letter from a George Petersen. ( Never heard of him ) claiming that George believes this to be original. Really? I read the letter and George says he brokered a deal in 1990 from a german FILM company that included about 150-175 of these uniforms. ( rare? ) and he had been told but a name he forgot that these were old stock used in many movies and any insignias were NEWLY ADDED. George adds that the studio made REPROS ( but he didnt buy any ) Seller states "  As you know 99.99% of all stuff from concentration camps was destroyed" Really? can't tell it by all the rare stuff he has for sale. He even has a couple of extra camp patchs for sale. Looks like he just opened the doors on an untouched camp! " "For sample I put a rare photo with a lot of uniforms before burned." ( What the heck does this mean? ) Estimate price for this item is $18,000 - $20,000. You will be surprised - the reserve price is very low. ( About twice what a REAL documented uniform sells for )

Concentration camp material isn't even allowed on eBay as far as I know. I don't think NAZI is period.

I'm confused...are concentration camp uniforms allowed? It looks like they may be...not sure.

I find it interesting that eBay has choosen to be a censor. I remember early on that they made a big deal about not having anything to do with what was sold, authenticity, quality, etc. They claimed to be only a conduit between seller and buyer yet now they have come full circle. While I myself cant fanthom how every jewish person feels about the horrific events of europe in  world war ii I CAN tell you what a survivor has told me in person. Many years ago I sold militaria of all kinds at a flea market. I became good friends with this rabbi that collected holocaust items. We would sit and talk, sometimes for hours ( easy to do at a flea market ) He educated me in many things I hadnt known or was misinformed about. He told me the history and signicants of the number tatooed on his arm. About hidden massages underneath stamps.  How the camps were run and how simply people were choosen to live or die. Listening to him was both an education and a humbling experience. One day a man came by, hell bent on starting trouble. he saw the rabbi standing in front of my table and he loudly started to complain as if to the rabbi and anyone within earshot. " Your a nazi! Your promoting kids to violence and neo nazism!  I should smash these ( A few german medals &  uniform parts)  look at that patch! ( Shows how ignorant he was, he was referring to a US Army 45th Division patch, prior to the 1930s they used a yellow swastika on a red field )  After I gave him a few loud choice words, the rabbi broke in and in a low calm voice only a cleric could muster in such a situation said " Sir, the children of this generation did not experience the holocaust. The schools gloss it over. They read but a few pages in a history book, they have no clue as to the magnitude of those events. By being able to see these things with their own eyes, touch with their own hands, smell with their own noses, they can KNOW it really happened. It Exists. It WILL hit home with them and it would be very very sad if we allowed those events to slip quietly away into history as just a mere fleeting thought. No sir, It is IMPORTANT that things like this be preserved and remain for many generations to come. The man walked away, speechless. Couldn't have said it better if I had a speechwriter.

Hi Steve, I think the uniform may be permitted. The way I read it, while it was supposedly nazi owned ( at one time ) it doesnt have a swastika on it and never did.  With censorship its kind of hard to tell whats going on in the mind of the censor. Either way I think its being misrepresented as original.

Comment by Ole Dog Eared Collector on April 10, 2012 at 10:35am

i see they ban anything related to violent felons. Guess that means books about 1920's gangsters are taboo.

Comment by Ole Dog Eared Collector on April 10, 2012 at 10:38am

if you word search "nazi" on eBay you'll get more than 14,000 hits!

I like your story. I wouldn't want to own any of it, and I hate even looking at it. But I think it's fine to deal in it and collect it as long as you're not glorifying it. What happened is something that we can never forget.

Comment by Ole Dog Eared Collector on April 10, 2012 at 10:58am

Steve, I couldnt agree more. Your point is exactly what the rabbi was trying to say. You detest even looking at it. Even though we were too young to have experienced it firsthand the sight of it burns a searing hole in your memory. Shouldnt the generations that follow us remember the holocaust as vividly? When I sold militaria I always tried to respect the feelings of others, I kept anything nazi half covered so it was not fully displayed yet you knew what it was. I fully understood that while the rabbbi was not offended ( and being a survivor he more than anyone had a right to be ) not everyone would feel the same. While I allowed kids to see what I had and I would try to educate them a little on its history I never sold to them or anyone I thought might be a neo-nazi.

Ole Dog, you said it. And you're doing it right. Alexander Autographs sold the Mengele diaries to a family with a living Holocaust survivor. He got hell for offering it, as you can imagine, and there were Jewish voices on both sides, like what happened at your table.

The diaries are chilling; Mengele was unrepentant to the end. I could barely read a page of it. But being able to see into the mind of the personification of evil is something the world will hopefully learn from.
