The Authentic Experience
I'm in the initial stages of researching, and writing a biography of Guitar Hero, Roy Buchanan.
Known as "The Greatest Guitar Player You Never Heard Of" his playing was not only an influence , but a template for Blues, and Rock and Roll guitarists of his time, and to follow.
I plan on telling the story of his life of early poverty, learning "Black" music in the church, early recording successes, traveling the world playing, becoming the king of the small rooms, influencing CLAPTON, HENDRIX, JEFF BECK, RONNIE WOOD, KEITH RICHARDS, JIMMIE and STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN to tutoring ROBBIE ROBERTSON, to his cloudy and somewhat mysterious death in police custody in 1988.
"UNDER THE RADAR...The Times of Roy Buchanan"
If anyone out there MET, HAS AN AUTOGRAPH OF or Has a Story about him, please let me know.
Thanks,
Steve Buchanan
Comment by Carl Ryan on March 14, 2013 at 7:27pm Hello Steve,
Nice to read your post. I collect pretty much exclusively guitar players, and Roy has had a huge impact on my guitar playing. Among guitarists he is an iconic force, but among the general public, most have never heard of him, which is a tragedy. He coaxed sound out of the guitar like i had never heard before. Literally making it scream and cry through his extensive use of his volume and tone controls coupled with unbelievable playing.
Roy died before my time, but i do have 2 autographs from him. One i am selling right now on ebay. I purchased that one from the collection of a major west coast collector by the name of "Lefty". I dont know who this particular man was, but apparently he had great access to the stars of that age. And his collection was being sold on ebay. I purchase quite a few including Tammy Wynette, Roy, Link Wray, Robert Cray, Peter Drake, and a half dozen others. I could put you in touch with the ebay seller who was selling all these if youd like. I dont know if the seller was family of Lefty, but he may know more on the story of these LPs and their acquisition.
The signature of the one i am selling now is very bold, and the LP is in perfect shape. And it has a long dedication from Roy. My other LP signed by Roy is signed in pen and i am hanging on to it. I purchased it from ebay as well about a year ago. Feel free to use these photos anyway that youd like.
Hope this helps, and i look forward to seeing your book. Roy was truly a legend, and has influenced more guitarists than he probably could have ever hoped for.
Carl
