great read, David.  I found this part interesting:

"It all boils down to eye appeal. Collectors and investors tend to prefer Sharpie signatures to ballpoint done during the player’s career. “Everyone wants the thick, wet blue Sharpie,” Stafford said. “Blue sells more than black. Blue ball point is understated.”

That could explain how I was able to get a vintage 1961 Topps Maris signed in blue pen for 1/3 of what is later in life, sharpie signatures command.

Personally, I prefer and go out of my way to collect, vintage players signatures.

I completely agree with you. I much prefer the vintage like the Hunt '66 card I showed. Please send me a photo of your card if it's not too much trouble. I'd love to see it.

Funny, how the market sets certain illogical, to me, trends.

sure, here it is.  it is also in a PSA slab.

from a selfish standpoint, I am glad my wants go against what the majority of collectors desire.  it helps me get great items at reasonable costs.

That's gorgeous. What excite me is to think that Maris certainly signed it during his epic year because of the card.

And I bet it was for some special fan. He took the time to draw that little circle over his last name.

David

that is what I love about vintage items.  it brings you back to the time that made that player special to you. With Maris, 1961 was my first year following baseball.  And I grew up in Boston!  but Maris was my first hero.  I have 3 of his 1961 version signatures (the card, a single signed bb, and a team signed ball) and I treasure all of them.

Do you collect other players, too? It's amazing how cheap some of these vintage signed cards are, even Mantles, relatively speaking.

At the show, I argued that "period signatures" are cooler till I was blue in the face.

David

That's a great article, David. The prices that signed cards of the top players are bringing these days are truly remarkable. Rare, high-grade sports cards, period, have had a phenomenal multi-year run.

And thanks for the plug!

Thanks very much, Steve! It's always a labor of love and you have such a terrific site for collectors!
