Ok we've all heard about accidental great finds at estate sales and garage sales, and heck, sometimes even on eBay. But what about on Craigslist? Well this summer I stumbled upon what was advertised as a "Babe Ruth signed baseball" in the Las Vegas Craigslist. The asking price was $400. So I just had to check it out, knowing of course that it was a scam.
So I got in touch with the woman who was selling it. She said that she "inherited" it from her father. She wanted $400 OBO. But she was trying to locate the "certificate" as she called it. She said she knew that if she found it, the ball would be worth a lot more, and then she would want $1000. She did say that she didn't know anything about baseball or autographs, but that she knew Babe Ruth was a huge name in sports. So I played along, and asked if she could send me some pictures. So here are three pics of the ball.
What more could you ask for, two iconic names, Babe Ruth and Crest, on one baseball, along with those other authentic facsimile ;0 ) signatures from the 1980s. Man, that Babe Ruth was amazing. Still signing baseballs through the 1980s.
So I told her I thought I would pass. Then she dropped the price to $200. Man, $200 for an obviously authentic Babe Ruth Crest baseball, also signed by Ozzie Smith. How could I pass? Yet I had to. So I suggested she put it on eBay. But she said she couldn't "cause I ain't got no PayPal. They won't give me none."
So the moral of the story is you CAN really find sweetheart deals on Craigslist. Just don't blow it like I did.
