Is this a mechanical signature of some kind?

I recently purchased this cut signature of actress Jean Simmons, and upon receiving it I noticed a faint outline that surrounds the ink in the signature. I've never seen this effect before. Could this be an autopen or a stamp of some kind? Or could it just be a natural effect from the type of pen used? I happened to come across an article recently (can't remember from where) that said that purple ink is popular for mechanical signatures, as this one is done in...is this true? Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Looks to me like the tip of the marker had a stray fiber sticking out.

Hmm. Semi-dead felt tip pen on textured paper? This is interesting - those fine lines in the strokes. Like hairlines. Not sure. Pete? Steve?

I can't speak to the authenticity of the signature, but the shadow is just the result of a damaged writing implement. The end of the fiber tip marker had a chunk missing out of it, or it may have been a chisel tip calligraphy pen in which one side was dried out.
