Ian, when you buy a graph whether its from Stevie nicks mums old shop or from one of the ip dealers, that signature has to stand up in it's own because your going to own it in the end and perhaps one day you want to sell it. So you want to try and buy the best example you can.
There are only a few names that really stand up in the ip community like Mike werhmann.
So what im getting at is names associated with buying a graph wont cut it if i want to consign something and it doesnt pass One of the credible tpa's.
Paul, great post. All good points.

While I haven't purchased from Stevie Nicks moms old store. I get it, but I know what I have. If I need to I can get my stuff "stickered" or certed. The 3 guys I have mentioned are all very credible with multiple proofs.

Provenance can be very helpful purchasing graphs, its nice to know if possible where and when they were signed, but to put that first to buy a sloppy mc graph wont work.
It is indeed a nice mc, Ian.

That where i can see a lot of inexperienced collectors falling into a hole buy from a ip collector/ dealer.

I'm surprised nobody is piping in about George Micheal dying!

That's true Paul.
It is a big mistake I made in my early days of collecting and I'm sure for many others too: I just wanted the autograph, but I didn't look at the quality of the signature, possible reselling value etc...
That's why I'd never consider buying something like that sloppy Macca. It might come from a valuable source, but without exact proof, rock solid provenance or a letter from like Caiazzo, the value lowers a lot imo. And even if you never plan to resell it, why buy a bad example from your favorite artist? Tons of better examples for sale out there.

Another example: some months ago there was a Bowie picture for sale on RACC for 2500 dollars. Again I'm no expert, but I never saw a similar sloppy one like that. And the so called proof pics where pics from encounters with Bowie from 10 years before or so, none in where he signed the specific picture. If you study a lot and grow as a collector you know it's market value is... well not even 500 dollar imo.

+1 many times.

Indeed, Kanye West for example. Absolutely worthless and ugly without exact proof. I'd never understand people want to buy that.
There will be none left the way its going.

And quite honestly I was thinking to add to Petes Autograph common sense thread. My advice is to save money and buy the better graph with the finest provenance. I see peole now selling the horrible Pauls for a grand, not good as an investment.Savy collectors want quality!
