Just came across this new resource that will surely be a great asset to not only collectors and dealers but 3rd party authenticators, particularly those who specialize in Sports and often seem to "struggle" with non sports, i.e. Hollywood......(hello out there in PSA land....;}  )

http://www.thecead.com/

About 6-7 years ago there was a web site that tried the same on  a monthly membership basis, but did not survive.  Hopefully this site will not only survive but grow and became a "standard" reference.  And, do we ever we need standards in this industry!!  (you'll hear more about that in my post in the next couple days).

It would be awesome to one day have a credible Forensic Certified Expert that also is CREDIBLE with autographs.   In the past when ever I have seen the word forensic associated with an autograph authentication , without exaggeration, the autograph is almost always bad.    I have no forensic background but from years of observation, it appears forensic training does NOT make one an autograph expert , or even a credible source of autograph authentication.    Which is no surprise when you think about it.  How would one know a Frank Sinatra or Marilyn Monroe signature unless they have spent years analyzing and/or collecting such?

Just employing handwriting analysis without extensive exposure to specific exemplars, results in flawed analysis.   Typical forensic elements, i.e. natural flow, shakiness, skipping, pressure etc, etc can often be present in forgeries, especially a forger who has extensively practiced a particular subject.   But those with extensive experience with a subject's handwriting style, variations over the years, secretarial examples , etc etc can easily spot the skilled autograph forgery.

i.e. can you guess how many Frank Sinatra secretarials have passed "Forensic" authentication over the past 10-15 years?   Or Elvis, even Walt Disney ?  JFK ?

Awesome site!  Thanks for sharing!

This is Gary, founder of the popular authentication resource,www.TheCEAD.com.  Several months ago, we launched a large online autograph shop atwww.ClassicEntertainmentAutographs.com, where you'll find excellent material, all painstakingly authenticated.  Have a look-- we've just added 100 or so names this week alone, as we grow, grow, grow!  We hope it will become one of the most trusted, comprehensive sites for autographed material in the business, backed with the same solid research that has so characterized the CEAD!

Best,

Gary

I thought I would add that the CEAD website is no longer available in case someone new finds this.   It was highly useful site utilized by many of us over the years.  Some of the top people donated exemplars.   Sites such as this are difficult and expensive to maintain.  It was a noble effort and Dr. Brucato deserves a lot of credit for doing it.   Hopefully, another site will take up the daunting task.
