It would be nice if major widely accepted 3rd party authenticators could admit they made a mistake but that will never happen because once they do that publicly, they lose all credibility and they will soon be second guessed on a constant basis and ultimately out of business.

They provide a service which is to provide their honest opinion on the authenticity of a previously signed autograph. They clearly state that it is only an opinion and that if they make a mistake they are not responsible. Anyone who submits an item to them for authentication is required to sign the form stating that they realize that statement is part of the contract and that they accept those terms. If you don't sign that contract, they will not authenticate your item. For that reason, they have NO liability whatsoever if a mistake is made.

You admit to using them for authentication because it increases the value of the item on the secondary market. The reason for that is because, in general, most collectors trust their opinion.

I have no idea what their error rate is but they certainly make them.

The autograph industry is much better off with JSA and PSA/DNA from a forgery standpoint in my opinion than it was before they became part of the process.

They reject a fairly high number of submissions. They are not just passing everything for money.

If indeed they realize they were incorrect in their assessment on the Jeters in question, they will not continue to authenticate them going forward therefore limiting the number on the market.

If they stand behind their opinion that they are authentic, they will continue to authenticate that version going forward.

However, they will never publicly admit that you or anyone else is correct in your assessment. That would be an endorsement of your expertise over theirs.

Just my opinion, of course.

I agree with you for the most part and do believe that the industry/hobby is a better place than it would be without JSA and/or PSA/DNA. I also understand that mistakes are made after all they are human like you and I however I think there are a lot of dealers/bulk submitters of these items that get a free pass most of the time because they do business in bulk with the TPA's. In the case of these Jeter photo's there was a consecutive number of 27 that were authenticated. Now with that said some people may say its not impossible to get that many items signed by Derek Jeter and then there are many that will say there is no way 1 person obtained that many especially since many are under the assumption that Derek does not like to or does not sign period. (Which is not the case).

I know that no TPA company likes to admit that they were wrong in a public forum such as this blog however the right thing for JSA to do is contact the submitter of these items and tell them 1) they made an error and need to somehow remove the stickers. 2) That they need to reevaluate the items or 3) Remove them from the database altogether. I think #3 would be the best this way when the buyer of these photos goes to verify the authenticity and there is no info they can go back to the seller and ask them why they are not in the system then the buyer would get the money back and the seller/submitter will be stuck with these forgeries. I know either way its a slippery slope but that's just my opinion.

Hopefully this was corrected before it got out of control.

Very good points.

I personally think they are good when items are mailed to them for authentication as they have more time to properly evaluate the autographs and can talk to each other about concerns.

I think they make a lot more mistakes when doing on site authentications and are rushed for time. That is probably when the larger customers submit large quantities and it is certainly more likely they could make mistakes.

I don't think they certify everything authentic just because the customer is large.

I have seen them giving large customers bad news at shows before and the customers are not happy.

I have exposed JSA and PSA/DNA trash plenty of times, if it's a forgery I will expose it I could care less about what sticker is defacing it.

I don't even consider myself a Jeter expert at all, but I've seen enough to see these are forgeries. They are a cut above the normal crap Jeters which is why I withhold my comments until I am able to go through my exemplars to form my opinions (Which should be common practice when putting forgery alerts online). When comparing there are several things off, but you really don't even have to look past the first D. JSA slipped up on these, and hopefully will learn from their mistake very quickly. Just like PSA/DNA slipped up on an ACE style Mariano Rivera.

For the record CEE GEE agrees these are trash as well.

JSA is wrong far more often then people think. There are tons of items they authenticate that I wouldn't touch. The fact they authenticate something is never my deciding factor.
