MICKEY MANTLE AUTHENTIC EXEMPLARS... READ ALL ABOUT IT!

I just wanted to post these here to see what Fudd the Lowly Mantle Collector can do to help stop the flood of forgeries into the market place. The goal is that we can all start educating ourselves before we buy. To see what a beautiful signature the Mick had, and to learn to distinguish it from the obvious forgeries at first glance. Something TTA, STAT, DREW MAX, GAI GLOBAL (Baker certs) My Favorite Players Reborn (Tony Podsada) & Christopher Morales can't seem to do....at all? You will almost never see a signature in this photo album collection that would match or come close to anything that has been certed by any of those guys. Maybe you'll find 1 in a 1000 if you're lucky. To tell the difference between what an original hand signed Photo by the Mick looks like vs. an obvious Fake at first glance is easy. Give it a try. It's Fun!

As has been told many times, The Mick made more in one signing than his dad did in 1 year. He felt obligated to his fans to give them a "work of art". He did this by signing on just the right spot for the particular photograph he was presented. The size of his signature was determined by how big the sweet spot was. He knew EXACTLY how to fit his signature in so it looked perfect. A thing of beauty really. Please note that these are not all the same signature over and over, but merely a sample from my collection. What I do know is that these are consistent with the WAY Mantle signed and structured his Autograph as we know it. Good luck! FUDD

I joined so that I can thank each and everyone of you with helping us out with the forgeries that were sent to us for our annual auction. You are doing a great service and I, for one, am very appreciative of all you do to help others!! Bless you all!!

I too appreciate all the info here regarding forgeries.. One question I have is this. Personally I sign my name a lot. We all do. I know my signature can vary from one day to the next, some days looking completely different than the day before. We all get cramps in our hands at times. Now I can see some of these forgeries listed here are blatantly obvious while others that the general concensus here claims to be a forgery look damn close. Isn't it possible that some of the autographs deemed forgeries can actually be authentic depending on how Mick's day was? We all have good and bad days right? I am curious and very intrigued by this. Thoughts???

of course that is possible.  very possible.  but if a signature is so non-typical that there are no exemplars that it can be compared to, it cannot be authenticated.  Also, we all sign our names differently, but I will bet that when you sign your name, even though you feel it is very different, it will have characteristics that are consistent. that is what we look for when authenticating signatures.

in the case of Mickey, his signature migrated into the style we are familiar with, around 1959-1960.  From that point on, he was very consistent.  The characteristics we use to render an opinion on his later in life signatures, are pretty much the same ones we use for his early sixties signatures.

I understand that terrier... Absolutely.. In some examples I see posted here that were deemed forgeries I stare at them for a long time. Letter by letter and for the life of me I can't see anything that screams forgery. Of course I'm a novice at this but It is these examples I speak of.. Not the ones that are ridiculously fake. What I'm trying to say is do we really know if they are forged or not?

Many of the Mantle forgery styles are well known, too, Jeff, and are immediately identifiable by members who study him carefully, like Terrier.

Thanks Steve.. I've read through most of the posts here today and yes, I can see some signatures out there that even an untrained eye can see its not authentic. But there are some that, if they ARE fake, are very good fakes. I'd like to know more about what "characteristics" I should be looking for. I have an autographed mantle ball (Bobby Brown) that I got a long while back. It came with a certificate which unfortunately no longer exists due to a rambunctious toddler. Now that I read here that Mantle signed balls on shopping networks are forged as well it has got me thinking what it is I'm holding. Like steiner says it looks real, but is it?
