Quote delivered by Colin Firth in Allen's new film, Magic in the Moonlight:

“Autographs are for mental defectives.”

Pure fiction, perhaps. But I suspect it reflects Woody Allen's underlying view.

But at least he signs them. I saw him perform in Seattle a couple of years ago with his jazz band and he signed everything shoved in front of him for about five minutes. I wish I'd known that he did as I would have had something with me and ready.

The title of your post makes me think this is about autograph hounds, but the quote you mentioned makes it seem like everyone who enjoys autographs. It's just a movie, probably colored by Mr. Allen's view of autograph hounds. I don't think there's anything mentally defective about the hobby. People buy screen-worn clothing. Someone just spent more than $3 million on a Superman comic. We collect autographs. One of Mr. Allen's biggest idols is Bob Hope. I'm sure he has some mementos dealing with Mr. Hope. Nothing mentally defective about that.

Humans take pleasure in activities that are pointless without our interaction with them. Inane things make us smile, and that is certainly alright -- implicit meaning makes our world go round.
