Framing autographs on a budget

Hi everyone, 

I have a couple signed  posters I wish to get framed and perhaps matted. I want to know your go-to stores and/or techniques/recommendations when getting an item framed on a tight budget, while protecting the integrity of the signature. 

My posters are 30in x 20in and 15in x 20in. What can I expect in price for these sizes using your recommendation?

Most people suggest UV plexi-glass so shards won't damage the piece if it falls.

I honestly got rid of every signed poster I had because I didn't want to deal with this.

I'm not sure what "tight budget" actually means, but if you follow every preservation suggestion to a T, the materials alone will cost upwards of $30 per poster at the cheapest.

With regard to both materials & labor, "you get what you pay for".

I've collected posters for a while, my favorite items to collect.  By far and away the best frames I've found are from hollywoodposterframes.com.  Sue is great, and every frame is custom cut to the exact dimensions you need.  They are archival quality and have non-glare "museum" plexi glass as an option.. which I highly recommend.

Full size archival quality frames (27x40) run about $125, which is a really good price for the quality you get.  I don't like matting my posters, I prefer simple frames that keep the focus on the poster itself not the frame, but I know they offer all sorts of custom options.. definitely check them out before spending top dollar elsewhere!

Hobby Lobby hands down for me.  You can pick out a frame already made and then see what matt board they have in stock.  They can normally do it right there for you and all you pay for is the frame and matt.  And their frames are on wall 50% off every other week and they have a 40% off coupon you can use on any 1 item.  My Hobby Lobby also does great custom framing as well.  I can not say enough good thing about them!

Hobby Lobby is my go to!

Here's some of the ones I have done myself. Hobby Lobby has good deals on frames too, I have just found that I can usually get them a little cheaper at Michaels, and more selection frame-wise. The first step is to figure out what size frame you need, as you have to take into account the matting. So for my 16x20, I believe I went with an 18x24 frame, and then I went to Hobby Lobby, picked out a matte for an 18x24, and then told them I was putting a 16x20 picture in it that I did not want to touch the glass. I believe they cut the "window" in the matte to 15.5x23.5, but talk with the people there to be sure on that. You do NOT want the matte "window" to be the same size as your photo, i.e. me getting a 16x20 "window" for my 16x20 poster....I did this the first time and the poster just goes right through and sits on the glass LOL. Learn from my mistake:

That Blink poster is fantastic. Good looking frames and mattes for all your items. FYI Ryan - Also took your advice and got a bat case from Michaels for my Mark Grace bat/ball combo - looks great as well.

I'll head down to Michaels/Hobby Lobby this week for pricing...Those online coupons come in super handy. . I'll post pictures of both my Ted Williams and Richard Wright posters once completed. This thread has turned into a great source of information with lots of different perspectives and options. Thank you all.

Thanks, here's another one I framed, along with the bat shadow boxes from Michaels. The 8x10 frames I use are from Michaels as well, and come with a matte. Usually around $6-$7 each after a coupon!

I usually buy frames from wholesale poster websites and then buy archival matting/strips to matte the photo.  Never have the autograph directly touch the frame.  Ryan's advice about the sizing is correct; I've had similar issues with not knowing how much to cut down the mattes.
