Hi Gents, just signed up for the website and I guess this is my introduction to everyone.

Been an Elvis fan for as long as I can remember.  Both parents loved 50s & 60s so grew up with this music.  Confession time:  accidently broke my Dad's 78s when I stood on them.

As part of my contribution, I would like to challenge everyone to a quiz which I hope will prompt some debate so that us lesser mortals can learn more about differences between genuine and fake.

Attached are 10 examples of Elvis's signature.  The challenge is to  tell me which one's are genuine and which one's are fake.

Have a go and let me know your thoughts.

My first thought as I read was this is some kind of wise guy and every signature is probably going to be either authentic or all fake. After looking at the signatures, I have to say I like the response from Timothy. I also found #4 to be questionable but the rest looked ok. I didn't do any kind of studying but went with my gut feeling.

Thanks Chad.

Given you have chosen to respond, I assume you now think differently.  I hope my responses to date have demonstrated this is a genuine attempt to learn and understand what is clearly a complex subject.

Like you I tend to trust my gut instinct.

Hoping for a few more contributors, so will wait awhile.  As I have stated previously, it is the ones we get wrong that we learn from.

Would appreciate why you think #4 is questionable, as it is this type of feedback which will help us improve our chances to learn and buy with more confidence.

One aspect of the #4 is the size of the P. The P is generally the highest point of his signature and that is not the case here. It also looks formed a little slower.

I have bought and sold a couple of Elvis Presley autographs in my day, but I still can't seem to get it right all the time.  When I see something that I think is good, I send to Roger and he says no good.  And then, afterwards,  I start to see the differences.   Elvis is just to hard for me to have a clear opinion.  So do I really don't even trust my own eyes when it comes to him.  I always have to get other peoples opinion.   My 2 cents.

Mark

Thanks Mark for response.  Like you I have been burnt, albeit many years ago, hence why I signed up and chose to use this website. I do consider myself the ultimate novice.  To be completely honest, there is no chance I would get it right if I didn't know the answer.

So it would be great if you attempted it, based on your own knowledge with some reasoning.

Once the answer is revealed, I am hoping this will prompt discussion and comment from those who clearly have more experience than me and it is this which will help us all learn more.

To be honest they all look good to mr

Thanks Mark.

I believe you and a chap called Don are in agreement.  I note you have been a contributor for some time so appreciate your participation.

For me, this is interesting as the differences expressed on this thread typify what I have observed over the last few months of research.  Clearly Elvis is a difficult signature to authenticate even for those who many hold in high regard such as AW and RE.  More confusing is the instances where top rated authenticators disagree.

Will reveal the answer in a couple of days, hopefully after we get some more contributors.

So, maybe you will say your opinion or your answer about this autographs? For me it seems little strange, that you only read comments, but still not write your opinion. I guess you know that this is site for study of autographs, it's not for quiz. We can play in quiz if we know that someone know 100% correct answer (we got different situation). Just I don't believe that you have 100% correct answer about any of this signatures.

Timothy

I THINK THESE QUIZZES ARE APPROPRIATE FOR THIS WEB SITE IT'S NOT JUST THE STUDY OF AUTOGRAPHS, IT'S THE ABOUT THE PEIOPLE IN THE BUSINESSS, THE DIFFERENT TYPE OF RIP OFFS THAT CAN OCCUR, ETC.

pLUS JUPITAR HAS SAID they are waiting for more responses. Fact is this thing was so mis posted that many who would participate are likely not aware -I stumbles onto this post by mistake and would never have clicked on the headline otherwise. But I can't wait for the response and follow up comments.

Even if what you say occurs it will spark some interesting comments and lend valuable information to the community.

well jupitar, you have pretty much gotten the responses you are going to get.

Time to reveal the answers and then you will see that a whole string of comments will follow

Right you are sling.

If Jupiter is looking for action...posting the answers will get the thread humming...

Hi all,

My apologies for the delay, but in my defence I have been a little tender following some surgery and the pen drive with my supporting information is misbehaving.  Once I have retrieved the data, I will publish the locations were to go to see the "experts" opinions.  However, most examples are published on the R&R auction website - guess I made it too easy.

The answer as some suspected, is they are all considered genuine signatures, according to the sources such as R&R.  Certainly the last 2 are easy to trace as they are available on a few websites.  All examples were obtained through recommended links in various threads on this website.

Timothy asked for my opinion on this.  Difficult to contribute without giving the game away when I knew the answer and more importantly I am a self confessed newbie hoping to get some key indicators from more informed persons on how to spot genuine against forgery.  Also I am not a handwriting expert.

However, I will now try.

Based on my review of feedback on this site, I would have expected people to challenge #1, #2, #3 and #5 and express doubts on #4.  The only ones I would be prepared to stick my neck out and challenge anyone to dispute is 9 & 10.  IMO, these are arguably the only two that could be considered as absolutely genuine from the evidence provided, hence why I am not an authenticator.

My question to those who got it correct, whether they added comments or not, is what are the key characteristics that convinced you but raised doubts with everyone else.

Sorry Don but as you were the first to provide the correct answer (well done by the way), I have to ask why you thought #1, #2, #3 and #5 were genuine.  My research on feedback on this site did make me challenge these.
