Al Pacino and the "squignature"
For your amusement, I'd like to share with you all my al Pacino signature, or as I call it squiganture because it's half signature half squiggle.
He did a red carpet here in Dublin a number of years ago. He walked past me on the way in to the cinema. But luckily he signed again on his way out, taking .5 seconds with everyone and signing my original Godfather still.

This autograph may be laughably rushed but I love it. Hope you guys do too :)
I should add that the worst "squignature" I ever got was Leonardo De Caprio - it was just the letter 'L'. I promptly gave it away to a big fan....

Most people know me for my Star Wars autographs and it shocks them when they ask what my favorite film is? My response has always been The Godfather. Watching Al's autograph devolve into checkmarks has been a horror, but the man is a class act, he always stops and makes sure anyone who wants one gets one.
He went from that to this....in no time flat.
it is ....what it is, at least he appreciates his fans and doesn't ignore them.

A real fan goes home with a smile on their face even if the signature is a bit gammy.When he walked past me on his way in I was so disappointed, so I couldn't be happier that I finally got the "tick" :P

One of the reasons I really do not really collect many "modern" actors. I think a lot of younger ones are following his example either to be "cool" or to show disdain for fans not sure which. Another possibility is that they never were correctly taught the Palmer Method of handwriting. As someone said above at least he does take the time to put something on paper for fans. How anyone could ever really authenticate that is beyond me.

True Scott - and I remember clearly when I met the late legend Ronnie Drew of the Dubliners. I offered him a sharpie, but he took out his pen instead. He said, "now, what's your name?", which is the original point of an autograph really isn't it? To have their "Best Wishes" or whatever.
I sometimes think that some - like Pacino - deliberately don't want their graphs to be "authenticated" so it's only special if you get it yourself and keep it.....
As a backlash against Ebay, I prefer that attitude to Robert Plant, who now treats his fans as lepers.

I can clearly understand sports figures, musicians and actors resenting having their signature put up for sale. I absolutely love when they will actually personalize something. I bought books from Desmond Wilson and Alan Lane with a request they use my full name. Of course I am sure it lessens the value in today's no inscription world, but I never have any intention of selling them. I also like the idea that some future seller will look on that inscription and grumble "why did that jerk have to have him inscribe it."

some of the highest selling autos have inscriptions as this can clearly demonstrate provenance...just doesnt look coold for the newbie to matt and frame.
