In fairness, it appears it was his first thread as a new member.  He also stated at the outset that he was only looking for input on recommendations for paper restorers.  The thread title was changed and was moved to The Beatles category without his consent which seemed to bother him. He specifically said that the fact that the paper he was looking to conserve involved the subject of The Beatles was immaterial.  He solely seemed to want member experience with paper conservation/restoration.

I don't think he owed any of us anything, to be honest.  I'd probably go schtum as well.

Technically you're correct on all counts, but then again no one here owed him anything, either, yet they took the time to respond and offer advice.

Whether or not the autographs were authentic was central to the subject of restoration.  And it was him, after all, who mentioned the Beatles aspect.

For a first time poster he certainly was quick to expect and counter the push back.  I would not be surprised if he had previously gotten bad news on these elsewhere.

It would seem to be irresponsible to recommend expensive restoration without ensuring that it was worth the effort.

+1

I recommended a specific restorationist on that thread.  Just answering the question regarding past experience in that area.

Well, he brought up Butcher covers and his success with restoring those but would never say if he meant from laminate or not, despite being asked specifically. I did not get that he was upset by the movement of the thread?

It was being pointed out to him  that establishing the authenticity of the items would be wise before spending  a considerable amount on  restoration. Fruitless to restore a set sf Aspinall signatures, unless you are the restorer. I wonder, if it were so, that showing that they were Aspinall would have any effect on his belief.

We are left with only what is more likely?

That the OP was handed a set of signatures (60 years ago or so) that were previously handed to his father, and was then told "these are Beatles autographs!"

Or

HIs father asked for and got all 4 Beatles to sign 4 slips of paper in front of him and hand them back, as well as pose for a photo?

With no further information than that already given, along with the refusal to show anything, I must choose the fist scenario as most likely.

I remember Eddy, and to his credit he never posted again IIRC.

I guess I should have just left it in the Town Square forum and recommended a restorer. Then, if they turned out to be secretarials and he complained, I could have just said “Well, you didn’t ask!”.

Just looking for a silver lining here, do we know if Neil Aspinall ever sang “Hey Jude”?  I’ll show myself out, thanks.

To be honest, I would not have presumed to enter the discussion if I had known it was going to go from restoration/conservation and become Beatles authenticity issues focused.  Some time back, I was politely requested to refrain from commenting in The Beatles category after a report was made to admins. that I have nothing to offer in that area of interest.  I typically avoid Beatles threads now.

It can be a Lonely Hearts Club for sure Eddy.

I thought that thread was very odd. “Me thinks he protesteth too much”. Unnecessarily defensive when people were only trying to help.  There is no sense in restoring an item if the item is not authentic.  The only reason you would not show the autographs is if you already know the answer.  No one challenged the story that his Father got the autographs but did he see them sign them or did he get the signed items from  Neil, Mal or another staffer. A big difference.   I think one lesson we all have learned in collecting autographs is “Sometimes the truth hurts!”

The OP starting off with "I have a set of Beatles autographs..." did not help. OP then made a certain rather large claim and was asked to provide evidence so members could render a meaningful and appropriate response to his posted question. The onus is the OP.  I see no problem.
