Dan, I think you're right about not featuring it anymore. The story may not be over but the discussion will appear in Google and our search engine so people who need it should fine it. Thanks

Pretty sure they consider "making it right" letting people keep the crappy autopen book for free. That's about all anyone is going to get and I'm sure they moved on.

We are more than 6 months into the Philosophy of Modern Song fiasco and per Dylan’s statement he has vowed to work with Simon and Schuster to make things right. Has anyone reached out to Jonathan Karp to see if things are moving in that direction? And if so, will people that preordered the original book get the first opportunity at purchasing them?

Yeah, I’d imagine it’s definitely something along those lines. In the case of the Dylan books, the publisher initially denied refunds to those who raised the autopen issue and stood by their letter of authenticity…I guess due to the uproar around such a high-profile name and the $600 price tag, they quickly agreed to refund everyone who had purchased it from them. Attention from this forum was pivotal to that imo.

not sure that it's true but I once saw someone say that even with the returns from people that figure it out they still profit greatly overall, most people who aren't avid collectors don't know, and if they sell 10,000 to 20,000 and 10 to 15 percent ask for there money back they still win. it's still way more than they probably would have moved without offering signed copies.

That’s a great question but I guess it’s because most still don’t know the difference. It can be clear from looking at just one signature, due to dots and flow issues…but once multiple copies surface with exactly-matching signatures, it’s pretty much indisputable. In the case of the Dylan books, they actually ended up using 17 (or more?) different autopen templates in an effort to make it appear the signatures were not mechanically produced. Dolly Parton and Ozzy Osbourne utilized similar…

Thank you both for your replies! I'm looking at autopens in general but using the Bob Dylan scandal as a case study. I noticed that it took no time at all for people to realize that the leaked copy was autopenned. Why do companies bother if it's that obvious?

Is your research for the Bob Dylan fiasco only or for all Auto pen scandals? if it's the latter then you should get plenty of info here because there have been many, and with a lot of high-profile names in the last few years. As autograph collecting became a much bigger fad in recent years there has been increased use of Autopen, stamps, and ghostwriters, I'm not sure of the number but signed releases used to be limited and were probably limited to a couple of thousand, now it's common for…

As autograph collecting became a much bigger fad in recent years there has been increased use of Autopen, stamps, and ghostwriters, I'm not sure of the number but signed releases used to be limited and were probably limited to a couple of thousand, now it's common for it to be 50,000 or more. a lot of us have tried everything we could think of to expose and stop it but with not much luck yet so I hope you can get it out there.
Also, regarding someone getti…tag:live.autographmagazine.com,2023-05-15:3524372:Comment:18398622023-05-15T12:27:27.272ZMatt M.https://live.autographmagazine.com/profile/Matt471

The signed edition of the book was initially offered for sale in October 2022 by Canadian bookseller Indigo. A copy then surfaced online, appearing to show an autopen signature. Indigo then pulled the title from their site, saying something along the lines that the publisher/author had decided to go a different direction.

Approximately one month later, the signed edition was offered for sale directly by the publisher Simon and Schuster with a letter of authenticity signed by the president of the company asserting that the signatures were real. Of course, they were found to be autopen.
