It is just heartbreaking to me to see the rampant fakes that are being sold on Etsy.
And the the positive comments the buyers leave are truly upsetting…

I can only sympathize with an Etsy buyer to a point. Research is key, if you are going to make a purchase of an autograph there are plenty of reference material out there (including this site) to help guide you. I don’t understand why people make impulse purchases on autographs and spend hours researching reviews on something as mundane as a toilet seat on Amazon.
Yes, Etsy is a home for total scammers.
I'm guessing most people buying there are not actually autograph collectors but fans of a particular celebrity. They are not seeking multiple signers and so don't have a larger frame of reference or "feel" for the market.
I belong to some discussion sites on various figures from the Golden Age Hollywood. Folks are constantly posting images of their "autograph". I've noticed over and over that the pieces in question often come with a COA from the seller. Most probably have no clue about services like JSA, PSA, etc. and the difference between them and the seller issued letter....much less knowledge of who are and who are not actual trusted sellers.
Toilet seats (lol) are not emotional purchases. The one time autograph buy of your favorite star is. So all caution is thrown to the wind (and there probably wasn't any caution to begin with).
