I've seen those albums for years Steve. There occasionally is someone still trying to sell them as hand signed. Do you know how they were represented as hand-signed in the fifties? I guess I'm asking if there is an existing copy of the ad or offer someone might have to share.

I'm not trying to start an argument but I would have figured Sam Phillips would have been behind that kind of thing. The more contentious this gets the more careful I want to be about what I believe as fact such as JJL personally representing stamped signatures as genuine. Regarding the more recent stamps, I don't have a problem with him or another celeb using them unless they are charging and calling them hand-signed.

What's wrong with arguments?

The offer was announced on "The Dick Clark Show." According to Wikipedia, 48,000 requests came in, so while Phillips was behind all of JLL's promotion back then, I can't imagine Jerry Lee Lewis didn't know about it.

I don't see much difference whether a performer personally represents something or their promotors do, as long as they know about it. Whether it's them, their promotors or insiders, the the buck stops at the performer. And the results are the same.

Here's what Wikipedia says:

  • March 8, 1958
Dick Clark announced that viewers could receive in the mail an "autographed"[6] 45 RPM single of Jerry Lee Lewis's latest hit Breathless by sending in five Beechnut Gum wrappers and fifty cents for shipping and handling.[7] 48,000 requests were received.[8] Sun Records sent out the promotional records, the song moved further up the Top 40, and sales of Beechnut Gum increased — the deal made between Dick Clark and Sam Phillips of Sun Records for this promotion drew some criticism and accusations of payola, but resulted in no scandal and no indictments.[9]

Regarding my argument comment, I suppose what I really mean is I want to remain friendly. I like the people on here and don't want anyone to think I'm trying to be an a-hole or something.

For reference, here is the promo in question. I found the image online.

So, did I miss something? Several replies were deleted. I am trying to catch back up to the discussion.
No replies were deleted by the house. I don't know if members deleted any.

We have guests tonight and just sitting down to dinner. I'll get back as I can.

I didn't delete anything either... just to weigh in here.

I get email notifications each time a post is made. At least 3 I clicked on brought me to this site and a message reading "

They were from Epperson and Batson. It's no big deal. They probably just decided to delete a post after initially submitting it.
I deleted mine because, after reading it, my comments seemed that they might be pointless/obvious to everyone on this site. I basically said that it's disappointing how celebs disregard how much we as colectors appreciate a "good" autograph. I sometimes think that people like Jerry Lee Lewis probably don't give a second thought to having someone sign for them. On the other hand, that notion seems very naive.
IMO, this all boils down to money. All of it. When it comes to money, some people can be trusted with absolutely nothing...

Agreed.

I'd be happy to wait in line and hand JLL $100 to get an album signed. But, after all this drama I wouldn't pay a dime for anything I didn't see him sign myself. Maybe he should try his luck selling VIP tickets to his shows. Unless he's only going to offer pre-signed items, of course. Which at this point, is probably exactly what would happen. So, uh, nevermind.

I deleted a few of mine because I didnt like seeing some of my replies posted on that 'other' autograph website.

AGREED - that is why I am actually holding back on some of this.

Mark

Why would you guys be concerned with what "they" have to write?
