I have never seen this sketch, whats the story behind it?

Hi,
Here the history of this sketch, was recovered by a sound engineer during the recording of the album "History" sessions. He was the assistant producer Terry Lewis who worked on the album. It dates from 1994 and was made in the studio "Hit Factory" in New York

Can you say who's offering it up for sale?  The reason I'm asking isn't because I'm interested or anything - but because tbh, I am very very leery of any drawings after Erick Lucas Burgos McKay had his drawings showing up in auctions around the scene, and good authenticators were getting fooled by them.  Artists are very good at #1 reproducing things that might look "Mike like" in nature of artwork and #2 they are very good at mimicking Michaels autographs.

Right now there is a drawing in Gotta Have Rock And Roll that was ok'd by some art buff guy that is IDENTICAL to a real drawing of Michaels (why would Michael make 2 identical drawings?) and then 2 days ago I found what I believe is another of Erick's that sold thru Nate Sanders Auction.

You can't discount a drawing cause it looks like another
It's not uncommon for people to draw something more than once

The only time I've seen near exact duplicates of his are either art enthusiasts redrawing his artwork (and there are a lot of people that do this---fans--and they do include his autograph too) or those who are selling a forged copy.

This is the original (the drawing is just called "Boy") - this drawing has been around the MJ fan sites for a very long time (long before he passed away).

.

This is the one on Gotta Have Rock And Roll.

Hi Wascher. Both of those "Boy" drawings are forgeries. The signature looks like someone traced over an authentic MJ signature. I'm familiar with Michael's drawings. He did not draw any of the artwork in this post.

Hi Sandra, Yes, I know the signature has double lines on it lol.  I am unsure why he went over his own sig (or someone did way back after he did it in 1994) but this IS the original.  Its been out there for many years.  I will have to dig out where it actually came from, but right now I just walked in the door... and I have to make supper before I fall over lol... I haven't eaten yet today.  I may even have it in one of the books I have on Michael from the 90's

I'm specifically referring to the side profile drawings that are flooding the market. I've seen the picture of him in the red shirt on this message board. I'm still not convinced he drew the "Boy". I personally would not bid on the "Boy" drawing at auction unless I saw a photo or video of him drawing it.

I agree that there are a lot of side profile ones that are not legit.  However I do think he drew some of those.  Some of the side profile ones are on scratch paper where he has notes around them.  And his handwriting is unmistakable.

One of the nice things about Google is you can chose to search between years.  You can find "boy" being sold in an auction in 2007 that was recovered in a warehouse that contained keepsakes of the entire Jackson family.  The warehouse fee's I believe were not paid and someone bought the contents.  Michael sued to have the auction stopped because it contained so many personal items - but it went forward anyway.  Some news articles on the auction Here and Here (the 2nd one shows the drawing, the 1st one, if you flip through the photos, you can see just how many things were in that auction).  I remember when this was happening actually.

I'm sorry tony that this doesn't answer your question about your piece.  I'm just very skeptical about any of Michaels artwork that came out or has been found after he died  There are so many people putting artwork up trying to pass it off as Michaels, knowing everything about where it came (and who is trying to sell it now) is extremely important.

You're right: he was a good artist. He wasn't as great as me :) I sent him one of my drawings to autograph and he never sent it back. I never saw it again. I've attached one of my drawings of MJ here. The drawing on the left is one I drew of my nephew when he was a baby. He's 32 now. Lol. Time flies!

Sandra,

You have immense talent!  Wow! But I am not surprised Michael did not return that drawing you sent.  He was known to keep things he really loved from his fans or people he knew.

Here are 2 drawings that we know with 100% certainty Michael drew. As you can see, Michael could not have drawn the boy because that was not his artistic style. And Michael would not have traced over his own signature.

The majority of drawings being attributed to Michael are side profiles which leads me to believe the same person is responsible for all of them.
