Although Aunt "Bee" Taylor was portrayed by Frances Bavier in the series, and the spin-off Mayberry R. F. D.   She did not appear in the Return to Mayberry movie in 1986 even though she was still living.  I only had two complaints about the movie the first being that in a politically correct move they sobered up Otis Campbell, and they killed off Aunt Bee. Personally I would have had a drunk Otis see the "monster" in the lake then take a pledge to become sober.   I also  think it would have been much better to have Andy phone Aunt Bee at her sister's rather than to have a "flashback" voice-over at her grave.  That is neither here nor they're just my minor complaints at an otherwise satisfying reunion movie.  The woman that did the voice of "Aunt Bee" for the movie was Janet Waldo who had appeared as "Amanda" in the TAGS episode "A Woman For Andy."  She also played "Amanda" in the movie.  June Vincent appeared as actress hired to play "Aunt Bee" in "The Taylor's in Hollywood." Gavin McLeod plays "Andy Taylor" in that episode hamming it up to the embarrassment of Andy himself.

Another bit of trivia about Frances Bavier is that she appeared in The Man in the Attic about Jack the Ripper.  Her husband in that movie was Rhys Williams they were reunited in the episode "Aunt Bee the Juror" where Williams played the judge.

Bavier also appeared in the 1950s Si-Fi The Day the Earth Stood Still with at least seven TAGS alumni including: Olan Soule, Roy Engel, Hugh Marlow, Dorothy Neuman, Harlan Wade, Walter Bacon and James Seay.

She even had a bit role in the now classic The Bad Seed along with Paul Fix, Jesse White and Frank Cady both who appeared in TAGS episodes.

I am not 100% sure about this, but I had heard she became a recluse. She had many cats in here house and she didn't like to go anywhere or have any visitors. I seem to also remember Andy going to visit her and it did not go well. So maybe they tried to get her on board and she didn't want anything to do with it. Andy has said in the past that they had a rocky relationship at times during filming.

I didn't answer the question, but I think the way she lived her later years may of played a big part in her not being included.

Hi Frank.  I think she was not interested in doing it she may not have felt up to it either.  I think Andy wanted her in it.  I think it was Ron Howard who apparently went to visit here and she talked to him through the screen door on the porch.  She was apparently was somewhat difficult and Howard Morris, Ron Howard, George Lindsey and Maggie Peterson have related incidents.  Ironically Andy Griffith always spoke highly of her and I never recall any reports of him saying anything negative.  He merely stated that she did not like him.  She herself in an interview gave Andy credit for the authenticity of the show.  I think she thought people loved her for a part she played not the person she was.  You are right she loved cats and had quite a few.  Andy tells of her calling him not long before her death to say she was sorry they had not gotten along that well.  I have always admired how Andy always gave her so much credit.

Scott, This is so interesting. I never knew any of this. There's probably a lot that went on behind the scenes that are unknown. I really liked this discussion.
