I guess I should have done a google search before posting this question, but couldn't James Garfield write equally as well with either his right or left hand, making him ambidextrous? If so, did he sign his name with his left or right hand? Did he ever alternate? Are the examples of a "left hand Garfield" signature and/or "right hand Garfield" signature?
GOOGLE:
"James Garfield is considered by many to be the first president who may have been left-handed. Anecdotes state that he could write with both hands at the same time. James Garfield could write Latin with one hand and Greek with the other, at the same time."
I'm working on a Garfield autograph study and I have a large reference file with hundreds of ALS, LS, Documents etc. My feeling - he wrote everything with his right hand or everything with his left hand. His skript varied little throughout his life and I'm sure we would see differences between left- and right hand.
