All,

I have recently, (through a very fortunate happenstance!) acquired an autograph (10x8 glossy , Blue-Sharpie Marker) from an actor whom I hold in high regard. They're not (as of yet) incredibly famous, and at present the piece isn't worth a great deal. However I would still like to display it for my own personal enjoyment.

I have done a little research into the world of framing, where I have been given the standard acid-free matting, UV ( museum / conservation) glass, keep out of sunlight etc. advice.

The questions I would like to pitch to the more experienced community here, which I have been unable thus far to find answers to online are two fold: -

1) Firstly, as a total new-comer to the hobby, would you be able to indicate what you would normally expect to have to pay for a museum glass / acid free matted frame for a photo of this description?

I am definitely going to be making an inquiry down at my local framers, but unfortunately my budget is very limited (one of the many perks of being a student, I suppose!) Therefore I would ideally liked to be armed with a little knowledge in order to be able to protect myself financially.

2) Whilst it would of course be beneficial to protect the item in museum glass, could any of you indicate the expected lifespan of the autograph if it were displayed behind regular framed glass? ( Probably, shock horror, on my desk - and not in a dark climate controlled closet.)

Finally, if any of you had any experience of photocopying autographed items, a little advice on how best to do this would be great, too.

(Disclaimer: The only reason I ask re. photocopying is that I am considering making a digital back-up that in the event the original is lost or damaged, I could still hypothetically continue to enjoy (albeit a cloned form) the autograph. I would never intend to sell on or make any monetary gain from this actor's particular act of kindness for a fan. )

Thank you in advance, and apologies for the length. If you have any further queries, please don't hesitate to let me know! Take care, and I hope you're all having a good day.
How to keep 11x14's from bending in the field?tag:live.autographmagazine.com,2016-06-15:3524372:Topic:9397912016-06-15T00:26:30.700ZChris Klamerhttps://live.autographmagazine.com/profile/ChrisKlamer

I have already tested some clear paint on a test item which made the Sharpie Ink run.

(2nd- I have Collected alot of Autographs on diecast cars, some diecast with multi- autographs on them, mostly with Sharpies, as the same as#1, does anybody know if I can apply something on to the autograph on diecast to protect from any damage that might be done such as rubbing or fading?

I Hope Someone That Knows Autographs Has The Answer, Thank You Very Much For Reading and Happy Collectting!!!!! Fred

I have a Paul McCartney autograph. Paul signed with a regular blue ball pen. The autograph was hanged on the wall framed behind regular glass. After 3 years 20%-30% from the color had faded and the autograph lost from it's strength. Now It's behind UV glass for a few years and everything is OK, it stopped fading.
While I may not be new to getting autographs in person, I am when it comes to what are the best pens and markers. This is especially true when it comes to silver. This all came about after I wanted to get a particular Rory Mcilroy photo signed in silver. I wanted it to be perfect and something that I wouldn't need to prep for a few minutes.

After a search around the message boards I kept seeing Deco, Infinity, and Sharpie as the best choices. I didn't like how the Deco and Infinity performed, so I went with the Sharpie and it turned out horrible on my photo. The signature is starting to come off due to it being high gloss (I wasn't aware that this would happen, obviously).

So I stumbled onto a video from an Upper Deck signing and paid close attention to what they were using. After taking a screenshot and blowing the image up, I had my answer. It was a Uni Paint Medium Line silver marker. I quickly ordered one. After testing it, it's by far the best looking and almost no prep needed. Now for some comparison pics (first one natural light and the other in low light).

In the beginning, I just thought it made a great display and I thought everybody was taking a picture of their autograph being signed.
But, then I went to a stick & ball sport convention in Rosemont, Il.. Their were at least 40 to 50 people in line that just paid $100.00 per autograph from a football player. I could not believe that not one of them took a picture of the player signing as I watched. And just around the corner was a authenticator was just around the corner that was all smiles, knowing that if not now, maybe later, that he will be charging $50.00 to authenticate that same autograph that you did not get a picture of him signing.
I can't believe in this world of all our new technology, I phones, and the greed and forgeries that is know, associated with autograph collecting, people are still getting autographs without pictures. Either in person, sending away for them, and/or buying them on EBay.
Even the authenticators are not perfect. They are human. They to sometimes make mistakes no matter what company they work for. They can mistakenly say a forgery is genuine, and visa-versa. In the world of autographs, they are almost like gods, they decide what autograph lives, all at your expense, just because you didn't take a picture of the moment. But for right now, having authenticators to police the collecting autograph industry against Forgers.
Unfortunately, there is not a full proof way to prove the authenticity of a autograph of the past. They did not have cameras way back when, and if they did, they were big and bulky. But now cameras are everywhere. Help stop greed & forgeries by every time you have a chance to get a autograph. Take a picture of the signer signing. If you are buying autographed, demand that you will only buy an autograph if it comes with a picture of them signing. If a company that is supplying a COA of a live autograph session, then they can certainly afford to take a picture of that autograph session.
Come on all you autograph hounds, let's put all theses forgers and authenticators out of business. After taken pictures of every 6000 autographs that I have, I know I am doing my part.
If you don' t help, then you can not complained from getting cheated from buying a forgeries, or a authenticator has charged a incredible amount from proving a autograph was not authentic even you knew it was because you received it in person.
