MICKEY MANTLE AUTHENTIC EXEMPLARS... READ ALL ABOUT IT!

I just wanted to post these here to see what Fudd the Lowly Mantle Collector can do to help stop the flood of forgeries into the market place. The goal is that we can all start educating ourselves before we buy. To see what a beautiful signature the Mick had, and to learn to distinguish it from the obvious forgeries at first glance. Something TTA, STAT, DREW MAX, GAI GLOBAL (Baker certs) My Favorite Players Reborn (Tony Podsada) & Christopher Morales can't seem to do....at all? You will almost never see a signature in this photo album collection that would match or come close to anything that has been certed by any of those guys. Maybe you'll find 1 in a 1000 if you're lucky. To tell the difference between what an original hand signed Photo by the Mick looks like vs. an obvious Fake at first glance is easy. Give it a try. It's Fun!

As has been told many times, The Mick made more in one signing than his dad did in 1 year. He felt obligated to his fans to give them a "work of art". He did this by signing on just the right spot for the particular photograph he was presented. The size of his signature was determined by how big the sweet spot was. He knew EXACTLY how to fit his signature in so it looked perfect. A thing of beauty really. Please note that these are not all the same signature over and over, but merely a sample from my collection. What I do know is that these are consistent with the WAY Mantle signed and structured his Autograph as we know it. Good luck! FUDD

Great stuff, Fudd. Thanks so much for sharing.  It always helps to see a large grouping of authentic exemplars to help train the eye.
  • CJCollector

Fudd was one of the first viewers of my videos and a staunch supporter.  Helluva job here, Fudd.

Below is a great example of a Mickey Mantle forgery.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/MICKEY-MANTLE-SIGNED-AUTOGRAPHED-OAL-BASEBALL-1...

  • Rick Meyer

I wouldn't even let my kid play with that ugly ball!!!
  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

    Fudd,

Thanks for these. I used them as examples of genuine for the Mantles in the soldier in Afghanistan's SPs.

  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

I need some very high resolution signed in person Mantle autographs from photos (1200 dpi+). Just scan the signature...don't need the entire photo. You either need to have seen these signed or know someone you trust 100% that saw them signed. Must be signed in Sharpie and scanned at 1200 DPI or better.

    Can anyone help?

  • Steve Zarelli

Hey Fudd... what do you think of this one? I hope you like it because I just bought it!! :-)

I like it when there is a crossover loop in the M. Don't see it too often on the second M.

It compares very favorably to this SP of yours:

  • Brandon Mysinger

Fantastic!  I see it now!  Once you see known authentic examples in a row, it makes it pretty glaring what his pattern and habits were.
  • Fuddjcal

I do like (love) the signature on the photo Mr Zipper, It would be one that I would try to purchase as well.
  • Steve Zarelli

Here's another one we can certainly put in the good column.

  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

Zippy, could high please explain why you're certain that's genuine? Education!
  • Steve Zarelli

If you look at the large image, you can see the flow and speed -- it was signed loosely and quickly. The letter formation is perfect when compared to known authentic exemplars.

Secondly, it was purchased many years ago before the forgery contagion hit epic proportions. Also, at that time, books were a very unlikely medium for forgeries.

I suspect that even to this day, forgeries in books are at a much lower proportion than with balls and photos.

  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

Mr. Zip, what did you pay for your signed photo if I may ask?
  • Steve Zarelli

$150 with no third party authentication. I am 100% comfortable with it and feel no need for a second opinion. The seller claims to have obtained it in-person at a Long Island card show. All of his material looked good and passed the sniff test.

Around $150 is the going rate for real Mantle 8x10 with no TPA. With PSA or JSA, you are looking at $250 and up.

As was documented here a few months ago, I got burned with some fake Mantles. My fakes were a cut above the STAT/Burczyk junk, but they were fakes none the less. Since then I have dived in and taken a crash course in the Mick. You look at enough good ones and talk to other collectors for tips... eventually it "clicks" and you can really see the difference between real and fake.

  • Steve Zarelli

Here is another addition to my collection. With FUDD's approval, I think we can add this as an authentic exemplar to add to the group. A nice over and under. :-)

  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

    Mr. Zip,

How about a close-up scan of the autograph so we can add it to our comparisons?

    Thanks

  • Steve Zarelli

  • Fuddjcal

not that you need my approval, but Fudd DOES LIKE this signature and wishes it was in my collection instead of yours. Has every "tell" I'm looking for as a "Lowly Mantle Collector"!
  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

    Thanks for the closeup, Zippy!
  • CJCollector

My man Fuddjcal will love this one from his favorite auction site:

  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

Boy is that Mantle obvious. Always at Auction, Chris? Who authenticated it?
  • CJCollector

Steve, for some reason they don't name the issuer of the COA on that particular item.

    http://alwaysatauction.com/iSynApp/auctionDisplay.action?sid=191&am...

  • Steve Zarelli

Pretty sure that isn't even an official MLB ball. Looks like a synthetic cover.

The slow "chugging" effect in the loops of the Ms is really visible in the ballpoint ink.

  • CJCollector

Simply put, it's a piece of dung of a forgery.
  • Fuddjcal

eye yai yai, those close up's really does do the item justice. One can really see just what a pathetic attempt this particular forgery version really is. You can COMPARE @ $3,099.00 though!!!! It really is enough humor to make one wet their pants.

Always Fake At Auction..."where America shops to get bent over and lubed up!" Compare @ being a moron for buying anything there.

  • Steve Zarelli

Here's a good one on eBay.

A Mickey Mantle signed 8 x 8.5 photo. You think maybe it's 8 x 8.5 instead of 8 x 10 because someone cut 1.5 inches off the bottom because it had a GAI or Morales or STAT hologram?

  • Steve Cyrkin, Admin

I think you're right, Mr. Zip. No question that it's the same forgery as the military and Always at Auction forgeries.
  • Rick Meyer

Doesn't even look like a photo on photo paper. Looks like a self print from a computer printer. I'd bet a paycheck that this came from Always at Auction. Majority of their stuff looks like this.
  • CEE GEE

I would hate to give away what makes a mantle authentic apposed to the ones that are flat out forgeries if forgers are trying to steal info on this site to better help rip people off....I know for certain how to distinguish the real from the fake....but as far as fakes I feel there is 3 types out there to clearly stay away from....the one in the kennedy photo is a famous style out there....very bubbly...then theres Marinos which has more sharper points in certain parts of the auto with a drop off  "M"....and then theres the short half moon with the tight lower bottoms and curved 4th portion of the "M" as seen mostly on williams mantle balls or mantle 500 home run club balls or photos....education is key in this industry espcially when mantle is involved.....mantle is number 3 out of 10 top forged sports autos out there....all should keep that in mind as an autograph collector...my first mantle ball i ever purchased was a fake....as a matter of fact my first 3-4 autos i ever purchased were fakes....always purchase from people you can trust....dont always assume a cheap autos authentic either
  • CJCollector

    Nice write-up, Cee-Gee.

I have never "educated" buyers about autographs mainly because I didn't want to give the forgers any hints to improve on their forgeries, but even with all of the Mantle "education" on Mantle autographs out there, all of the forgers trip up somewhere.  99% of Mantle forgeries are fairly easy to spot.   Even Marino's Mantle forgeries had obvious flaws.  The below is a "Marino" Mantle.

The Mantle forgeries at that other (I will not name them) auction site are horrific and obvious and yet a so-called "Forensic Investigator" forensically passes them as authentic.

  • CEE GEE

Heres a great guide to go by if your looking into purchasing a mantle...if it looks like this famous forgery head for the hills....purchasing autos is all about education....chances are sadly but true if your an unsuspected collector and purchased 10 autos from uncertified sellers and auctions chances are half or more of those 10 are fakes...ive been doing this for long enough to know the difference now...after getting burned on some of the top names of all time...it happens to everyone and the crooks far out way the honest sellers or distributors...if you own 100s of autos chances are some fakes slipped in sadly....it takes a long time to be "in a way" a forensic document examiner in your own right checking for so many signs of characteristic forgery trates...as pressure and flow and such not to give away info to the crooks....but all in all it is possible to get an uncertified authentic Mantle as I have in the past...you need to know what to look for and the difference between the good the bad and the ugly
  • Steve Zarelli

Where did you get that image?!?  lol

I did that almost 10 years ago and hosted it on my old site. I really don't like it now and don't feel it's as accurate as it should be.

  • CEE GEE

i think i got it off of google some time back searching for mantle fakes and i think that image came up...i always felt it was a great guide for the buyers out there that need to educate themselves and stop feeding the thieves with there hard earned cash...i would like to thank you for putting this up whenever you did as i have shared this info with a lot of buyers looking to purchase one of the holy grail's of baseball autos if not in all sports period...GOD I LOVE THIS SITE !!!!!!!
  • Steve Zarelli

I'm not confident it's really accuarte anymore and I know a lot more now than I did when I did this 10 years ago. Not sure I agree with the high K. And some real Mantles do have the stretched out "tle." I just wouldn't want anyone to place too much weight on it.

Although, it is a good example of a Marino Mantle forgery. Ahhhhh... my first Mantle fake courtesy of B&Js Collectibles. The memories....

    lol

  • Rick Meyer

B&J Collectibles is where a ton of the other auctions site comes from. He is buying it from their left over inventory. sent me an envelope hr received stuff in and taped over where it came from. Can read it clearly through the tape. To cheap to buy envelopes that they reuse them. LOL. Funny.
  • CEE GEE

another great example of a AUTHENTIC mantle out there at auction currently...also some other yankee autos including a really clean whitey ford
  • CEE GEE

the example below and 2 more superb authentic MANTLE'S to compare to

  • Fuddjcal

some great Authentic Mantle's there CEE GEE. I think many collectors are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel?
  • CEE GEE

I hope so Fuddjcal...we can only hope so...feel free to check out my latest forum I just posted to help other Mantle fans on what to look for on how to educate themselves on an authentic Mantle from his career changing style's in his autographs.... one of the holy grail autos of baseball
  • Steve Zarelli

For reference, here is another B&J Collectibles forgery currently on eBay. I'm starting to wonder of these are Marinos or another forger.

    Useless COA.

  • CEE GEE

Thats an awesome piece right there zip...forgeries are infesting the auction market 9 out of 10 on the Mantles easy...
  • Steve Zarelli

If anyone is interested, here is a nice one on ebay now for a decent price. The seller is good as I bought one of my Mantles from him.

Disclaimer: I have no relation or interest with the seller... just trying to pass on a good item!!

  • CJCollector

My buddy Fuddjcal will love this one that is up for auction over at "that" other website.  Amazing how this 1961 vintage Yankees photo is all-of-a-sudden on a auction site and autographed by Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford.  Authenticated (haha) by Mr. Document Examiner (Drew Max/AAU).

  • Steve Zarelli

The Mantle is obviously fake in the 61 Yanks photo. I have not studied Whitey Ford as closely, but we have to presume that is fake as well. Another exemplar to add to the rapidly ballooning "forgery example" file.
  • CJCollector

The Whitey is a piece of crap, Mr. Zipper.
  • CEE GEE

Its funny you mention about the Ford....I have noticed some fake Fords hitting the market lately...very weird...his easy accessible and affordable
  • Steve Zarelli

    his easy accessible and affordable

The old maxim that "some things were not worth the forger's time" is out the window. It's apparent these slugs will fake anything -- even the most common $10 autograph.

Waiting for the appearance of a flood of forged Bob Feller and Enos Slaughter items...

  • CEE GEE

HE'S ACCESSIBLE...TYPO...anyway be on the look out for Killebrew's to be on the rise as well..
  • Steve Zarelli

look out for Killebrew's to be on the rise as well

Oh yeah. His fake style is already out there on the 500 HR lithos, but it's really obvious even to someone casually familiar with his signature.

  • CJCollector

Here is another example of a Mickey Mantle forgery with a COA from "B&J Collectibles."  The seller of this forgery used to sell a ton a of that GAI garbage certed by Mike Baker.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/MICKEY-MANTLE-MAYS-SNIDER-SIGNED-MAJOR-LEAGUE-B...

  • Steve Zarelli

Here is a forgery style I've seen a few of lately. Not sure if this is a new style or an old style and a few just happened to crop up recently.
