Great mailday yesterday, but not without disappointments.
First, I wrote to Si Robertson of Duck Dynasty. They sent back my stuff unsigned with a pre-print, catalog, and form letter stating why they can't sign. The bright side of this is that they didn't waste my sase. I also got a RTS for another address that I found for Perry Saturn. Guess I'll give up trying to get that guy ttm. The last disappointment came from Chris Pronger. Although he did sign 2 of the 3 cards that I sent, he didn't signed the one that I really wanted or return it! That's why you never send anything that you can't afford to lose. Other suuccesses came from Al Pedersen,Fernando Perez, Miguel Cairo, Dawn Wells, Don Beaupre, and Johnny Rutherford.
I got a couple of nice replies to finish out the mail week. First, voice actor, Rob Paulsen signed 4 of 4 for me and my son, Jakob. Next, legendary Utah Jazz center, Mark Eaton signed 3 of 3.
Finally got one! Today's mail brought me the autograph of R.B. (Brian) Atkins, former flanker for Auburn University from 1977-1980. Auburn was a triple option team back in those days, so R. B. only recorded 7 catches for 105 yards in his career. However, his legendary status was built as a tenacious downfield blocker who sprung Joe Cribbs and James Brooks for many of their historic long runs. Today, he is the proud owner of R.B. Atkins & Associates in Bessemer, AL.
Been a while since my last baseball TTM success. The 'Ole Professor's mail today had a nice one from Andy Ashby. Andy was a 2-time National League All-Star in 1998 and 1999 with the Padres, and was a key member of their 1998 National League Championship team. On June 15, 1991, as a rookie, he became the 24th pitcher ever to strick out 3 batters on 9 pitches.
Hi all! I've been getting some sweet ttms this weekend, but my wife has our camera in CT! I'll get them posted for you all on Monday! I did get one disappointment. Giants punter, Sean Landetta, sent my cards back unsigned and used my sase. Grrr.
Great returns everyone! When I first joined AML! when this site first launched, the first autograph I remember getting using this site was Ed Asner. Thanks for the memories, Bob!
Today, I got 2 really nice autographs, one I have been wanting since 1991! First, I got the autograph of former Georgia Tech tennis star, and current University of Florida men's tennis coach, Bryan Shelton. As an 19 year old, he won the U.S. Amateur Tennis championship, and was one of the top doubles players in the ACC in the mid 1980's. Bryan was named an All-American in 1988, and came within 1 match of capturing the 1992 French Open mixed doubles title with Lori McNeil when they lost in the championship match to Todd Woodbridge and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. He would later coach the Georgia Tech women's tennis team to the 2007 NCAA National Championship.
Then, the long awaited one. Eddie Anderson is LEGEND in the annals of football in the state of Georgia. He was a star for Warner Robins High School in the early 1980's, which at the time was one of the top high school football programs in the United States. He went on to Fort Valley State University, where he would amass 26 career interceptions in just 4 years, and win the SIAC Defensive Player of the Year award. He was drafted by the Seahawks in 1986, and would land with the Raiders in 1987, with whom he would play for until he retired in 1998. While with the Raiders, he would set a team record with a 102-yard interception return for a touchdown in 1992. I use to read about this guy as a kid in the Macon Telegraph on Sunday mornings, from his high school days, all the way through the pros, and always wanted his autograph on the football card I got of him in 1991. Now I have it. So grateful.
Got Maxie Baughan in today. Found his Georgia Tech card in my collection a few days ago and sent it out. Maxie was an All-American in 1959, and a member of the Philadelphia Eagles 1960 NFL Championship team.
Got the autograph of another Georgia Tech great today: Gary Lee. Gary was a great receiver for Georgia Tech from 1983-1986 (67 catches for 1,299 yards, and 14 touchdowns.) He also averaged 20.8 yards on 42 kickoffs, taking 2 of them back for touchdowns. His greatest moment came in the 1985 Georgia-Georgia Tech game. Trailing the Bulldogs 10-16 with 4 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, Tech needed something big. "Big Play" Gary Lee took the kickoff, and raced 95 yards to tie the game at 16-16. David Bell would kick the extra point to out Tech ahead 17-16, and then add a field goal for good measure as Tech would go on to win 20-16. I found a replay of that famous kick return on youtube:
I got a few this week, but am hoping to get their pictures on this site soon. First, Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Atlantic Airways and the Virgin empire (it may be fake, I am not sure), second Tommy Aaron, Master's Cup golf champion and last but not in the smallest way least, Mary Lou Retton, Olympic gymnastics gold medalist in 1984!
yesterday I got back in the mail my former Minne Gophers player and now assistant coach Kelly Roysland and the day before i got a listia win of Alexis DeJorja nhra driver
i got block buster autographs ttm from francis ford coppola in a form of an autograph picture and a transformers picture signed by peter cullen the voice of optimus prime! The peter cullen autograph was a two year wait!
And I thought I had a good one today, Bob. Your's puts mine to shame, but I'll share it anyway. :)
Got the autograph of former Bills wide receiver, Andre Reed, today. Andre was, in my opinion, one of the best receivers of his era. I don't know how many time I cussed, pounded my fists on the floor, and just have my heart ripped out by this guy during my childhood (I was a huge Dan Marino/Dolphins fan from the time I was 10 until Dan retired.) Dan Marino no doubt would have played in about 5 or 6 Super Bowls, and probably would have won 1 or 2, had it not been for Andre Reed and the Bills. 951 catches for 13,198 yards, and 87 touchdowns, with Pro Bowl selections every year from 1988-1994 should be good enough to get him in the Hall of Fame some day. He was a finalist this year.
Bob, I have NEVER gotten Dan Marino through the mail. Have tried for years, and have built a nice collection of pre-print pictures! :) You have to go through Mounted Memories to get him, and I did back in 2005, dropping $250 of my tax return (remember when we use to get those?!) to get a nice framed 8x10 with all the certifications and holograms.
Yesterday was a fantastic day TTM. Got the autographs of Tom Banks and Raymond V. Damadian.
Tom was an All-SEC center for Auburn University in 1968 and 1969, and went on to be a 4-time All-Pro center for the St. Louis football Cardinals from 1971-1980.
Raymond V. Damadian was, in my opinion, the inventor of the MRI machine, and is a member of the National Inventors Hall of Fame. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding those who were working in the field of magnetic resonance imaging, and many discount Mr. Damadian's discoveries and achievements. Though many debate about whether he was the first once to discover MRI, there is no doubt he was the first to build a fully functioning machine designed to detect tumors in the human body. Simply an amazing man with a wonderful story of perserverance.
I got an autograph picture and signed letter from actress heather tom from bold and the beautiful. I got an autograph picture from her once before and never sent for a second one so i thought this was a class act from her!
Today, I receved my card back fro Valeri Bure unsigned. I hate when they do that. If they don't want to sign, they should just refuse it and put it back in the box! That way, I would still have me sase! All is not lost though as I did get back some signed pics from the very sexy Terri Weigel!
Picked up some great TTM's these last few weeks - Alan Jackson, Andre Agassi, Joe Theisman himself and he signed my photo of him and Ara Parseghian which Ara already signed, Warren Moon, Shawon Dunston, Tom Brookens, and Eric Dickerson.
Jeff, those are some truly amazing successes. Simply amazing.
The 'Ole Professor finished off this week with an autograph of Herb Paterra. Herb played for the Buffalo Bills in 1963, and for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League from 1965-1968, helping them to win 2 Gray Cups. Whats even more amazing is from 1971 through 2006, with the exception of the years 1996-1998, he was coaching defense somewhere at the college or pro level. That's 41 years of college and pro football experience! Look him up, he's got an amazing story to tell.
@ Jeff & Robert, even though Dan Marino lives relatively close from my house (I'm in S. Fla.), he is pretty hard to get. My ex-roommate bumped into him at a wine store in Weston, FL and he decided to take a photo with him rather than getting an autograph. Knowing how hard he is to get, I purchased a signed mini-helmet, which I did not have to break my bank to get. I got quite a deal 4 years ago for $75.
Nice. I wonder if he thinks the new Dolphins helmet logo looks as rediculous as I think it does. It could just be me. I have a very old, don't-break-tradition way of thinking.
Got the autograph of former Auburn punter, Dave Beverly, in today. Dave played for Auburn from 1970-1972, and was All-SEC in 1971. He went on to a nice career in the NFL with the Oilers and Packers (1974-1980.)
