I see a lot of questions around the internet and collector's chat regarding Harrison Ford autographs. Quite honestly, Harrison is a very good signer and is out in the public quite a bit ( unlike some stars that only appear during a movie promotion ) in California and NY.

Harrison is one of the top names in the last 30 years of entertainment and is by far one of the most desirable autographs for any collection.

Since I have been regarded as one of the world's biggest Indiana Jones collectors and a huge autograph collector, I obviously place an emphasis on Harrison's autograph for my collection.

Luckily, I have been able to meet Harrison a few times in NY, LA, and even in the local town of Morristown, TN ( 15 min away from me ) where he visits Callista's family who lives there.

I also have friends in the hobby who are major in-person collectors and dealers. They help me get items sign when they can catch him in NY.

But what about collectors that can't meet him or know people who are rackers? Is the market safe? NO! not really. Unless a collector knows what to look for and where to look for authentic material.

So, I want to show some examples of authentic Harrison Fords ( mostly recently signed from 2008-2011 ) compared to some of the standard forgeries.

The next few items are in my personal collection and the images can't be used without my permission.

Now, it should be easy for the folks here to see how bad the actual NASCAR autographs are ( not sure about the other items )

The real issue though is the blind Letter of Authenticity by JSA. If you read the letter, it simply lists the items that JSA authenticated for the auction house. To paraphrase, ...(12) dale Earnhardt Photos were authenticated. However, the letter shows NO images of the items and the items for sale on ebay do not have any physical connection to the letter OR JSA.

So, is this an example of a seller using a summary letter to try to sell VERY BAD forgeries, or is it something else? I really can't see JSA just issuing a blind LOA to a customer simply staiting the number of items authenticated, without other descriptive info.

I think this is important enough to show to ALL users. As this is a VERY dangerous practice. I would like to know what the other experts think of the other sports "autographs" listed. As for the NASCAR items, they are some of the worst attempts at autographs I have seen in 22 years in this hobby.

I think JSA needs to be made aware of these listings so they can take the appropriate measures to protect their name.

These NASCAR items may be gone soon anyway though as I have done my part with ebay.NASCAR: Driver Autograph Holograms....THE TRUTH!!!tag:live.autographmagazine.com,2009-12-16:3524372:BlogPost:112622009-12-16T18:03:02.000ZBrandon Mysingerhttps://live.autographmagazine.com/profile/BrandonMysinger
Many people have either heard about, seen, or own signed Jeff Gordon & Dale Earnhardt Jr. autographed items that include the individual driver's numbered hologram.

These Holograms were designed for the drivers as a way for fans to know that they have purchased authentic signatures. However, there are some very strong misconceptions regarding these holograms. I hope to clear these issues up with this blog post.

1st, Let's look at the holograms on signed 1/24 scale die-cast cars

JEFF GORDON:

DALE EARNHARDT JR:

I want to start off with the discussion by telling you HOW you can obtain a hologram. The easiest way, is to buy a pre-holo'd item through various vendors such as QVC , Mounted memories, or the driver's race stores ( if offered ). The drivers usually sign a number of items to be sold through various outlets as well. Qvc is the largest vendor of the holograms. Drivers sign thousands of items to be sold through their "for race fans only" brand.

The more difficult way to get a hologram is by meeting a driver at a specified meet and greet appearance. The holograms are offered there. However, you do NOT have to have a hologram placed on your signed item. This is where I must warn collectors that the glue on the sticker can damage older photos, postcards, or other items. I have seen several Jeff Gordon Rookie postcards ruined due to the hologram's reaction with the old stock cardboard paper used in the postcard.

Remember, if you choose to accept the hologram on you item, it will be placed over a portion of the signature. It can disrupt the presentation of the item due to the color changing effect that the hologram displays. Plus, each hologram has the Driver's logo and the individual serial number on it as well.

Now comes the time when I bust a LOT of collector's bubble's regarding the hologram sysytem. The holograms are ONLY given out at organized signings ( or through vendors ) they are NOT offered at any time at the race track where 80-90% of all NASCAR autographs are obtained. When you are lucky enough to meet Jeff or Dale Jr. at a track and obtain a signature, you will NOT receive a hologram. The logistics of this makes it impossible. This means that THOUSANDS of items are signed each year without the pressence of a hologram. It does not make them any less real at all.

This is due to the fact that the hologram is a VERY clever marketing tool. Is it smart? YES! Is it important for buyers? YES! However, the holograms are NOT assigned to every item signed by these two amazing drivers. In fact, there are FAR more autographs without a hologram that are authentic, than those with a hologram issued. This is confusing to many people who think that items are ONLY real if a hologram is included.

One feature offered for hologram owners is that you may register the item at the driver's website. ( in the case of Jeff Gordon, there is a minimum charge for this feature ). This will show what the item is and where / when it was signed.

Remember though, if you obtain a signature away from an organized signing, you are not able to obtain a hologram for the item at a later date.

All of this makes for a nice blend of options. If you collect holograms, you know the item is real. If you buy items that are not holo'd, DON'T be afraid to make the purchase, the drivers sign plenty of authentic material. However, you should seek out an expert opinion justto be sure ( USE THE FREE AUTHENTICATION SERVICE I PROVIDE HERE).

I hope that this clears up a few misconceptions. The main one being that if an item does not have a hologram, it is not real. That just 100% is NOT TRUE!! Quite the opposite infact!
BEWARE!!! It seems that many "collectors" are dumping collections of old die-cast cars, trading cards, and driver postcards / photos & Magazines at this time. What appears to be a growing trend is that some of these sellers are forging signatures ( or they bought the items already signed wit ha forgery and didn't know ) onto these older items in hopes of drawing interest.

DON'T be fooled by these older ( vintage ) NASCAR collectibles that are signed. Understanding the evolution of a NASCAR Driver's signature is a VERY specific skill.

For those of you that are new to the hobby...PLEASE realize that many drivers don't sign the same type of autograph that they did years ago. for example, Dale Earnhardt Jr used to sign his FULL name on every item. Around the year 1999, he changed over to signing Dale Jr. full time, around 2003, it changed again and so on.

A Jeff Gordon NASCAR Autograph from 1991-1995 has a much different look to the signature than it does now. Even as late as this year, Jeff's signature pattern is changing. He has MANY signature patterns that flow from his pen. This takes a well trained eye and knowledge of these variations to determine authenticity.

At this time I am working on a database of signature comparasons for this site. Until then, please realize that there are many older items on the market at this time that contain a forgeries. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

PLEASE feel free to contact me at anytime to show me any item(s) you are looking to buy. I will gladly give you a FREE review and help you decide if the item(s) are legit. If they are not legit, I will make sure the seller is made aware and that the item(s) are removed from the market.

Don't be scared away from buying older NASCAR autographed items. Remember, NASCAR has ALWAYS been the #1 autograph friendly sport. There are MILLIONS of authentic items floating around out there. With the right eye, you may just find some VERY special signed vintage items. As the Hall of Fame becomes a reality, the search for vintage signed items will become more popular. This is the best time to collect autographs from every NASCAR legend~~

I look forward to helping all of you!
The news reports are starting to steam up the wires as the story surrounding Indy racing's "It Girl" Danica Patrick and her possible NASCAR future becomes more public. It appears that Danica is going to follow in the footsteps of another Indy racing great and now NASCAR legend ( and current 2009 Sprint Cup Points leader ) Tony Stewart. Tony paved his path to NASCAR fame by taking a very slow and methodical approach to entering the sport that has humbled so many of Indy racing's "Top Stars". Danica was smart to turn to Tony early as her interest in the sport of NASCAR grew into more than a "what if" scenario. It now appears that Danica is going to follow a similar path to NASCAR fame. With a Possibility of beginning her NASCAR career in the 2010 season. Danica may be set to race in "select" NASCAR Nationwide & Camping World Truck series events all while maintaining her Indy racing contract for the whole 17 race Indy schedule.

NASCAR is widely known to be the toughest racing series on the planet. Many former Indy 500 and Indy series champions have attempted to make a name for themselves in the series. However, very few open wheeled drivers actually find success. A.J, Foyt, Tony Stewart, Robby Gordon, & Juan Pablo Montoya have been the best of the open wheel drivers. Other open wheel champions such as Dario Franchitti, Patrick Carpentier, Sam Hornish Jr., and others have found the road to NASCAR fame to be filled with wreck after wreck, and sub-par finish after sub-par finish. Many of the open Wheel drivers simply give up their stock car dreams and return to open wheel racing.

One other thing Danica will have to adjust to, is NASCAR's overwhelming popularity and massive fan base that will be setting their sights on meeting the new girl in town. In NASCAR, fans don't just want to shake a driver's hand and wish them luck. No, each fan that Danica comes into contact with will want an autograph or two. Even though Danica is already known as a fantastic signer, she will have to be ready to sign for more fans than she has ever imagined. That is as much of the NASCAR legacy as anything.
Throughout the 22 years that I have been obtaining NASCAR autographs in-person, I have had the chance to meet every driver that has driven in the sport. Many times, these drivers come along and begin their careers as fast drivers and great signers. However, as time goes on or as they become more popular, they stop signing as much as they once did. This is not to say that they do not sign or that they don't like signing for the fans. It usually means that they have more and more demands placed upon them by their teams and/or sponsors.

Time and again, drivers follow this pattern almost like clockwork. thankfully, one driver has remained a VERY willing signer even though he has had the most success on the track since the 1970's. That driver is the three time Sprint Cup Champion, Jimmie Johnson.

Jimmie came from a early career of racing motorcycles, off road, ASA series, and Nationwide Series vehicles. After scoring a win in the Nationwide Series in 2001, he was signed to Hendrick Motorsports in 2002. The rest is History. Jimmie raced his way into the current Sprint Cup Series, where he has already scored 43 wins ( including three Brickyard 400 victories at Indianapolis, a 2006 Daytona 500 win, and a Sprint All Star race win ). Jimmies biggest claim to fame however, is that he is the reigning three time Sprint Cup champion. Jimmie is the second driver in NASCAR history to score three consecutive Sprint Cup Championships. The other driver to manage this feat was Cale Yarborough in 1976, 1977, & 1977. Jimmie is currently in a good position to possibly being the first driver to win four consecutive chanmpionships.

All of this fortune and glory has launched Jimmie into NASCAR'S top tier of most popular drivers. However, no matter how many wins, Championships, and fans Jimmie earns, signing autographs remains a major part of Jimmie's life.

I first had the chance to meet jimmie in 2001. at that time, he was the up and coming driver with the funny autograph. Eight years and three NASCAR Sprint Cup Championships later, Jimmie continues to sign for fans every chance that he gets each race week-end. For example, following each 2009 Bristol race week saw Jimmie coming straight from track qualifying and heading directly over to the fans waiting along "autograph row". Jimmie's abreviated autograph allows for him to sign many autographs in a short period of time. As always, Jimmie signs as many items as fans can place in front of him. taking time to personalize items as requested.

Nascar continues to be the best sport for autographs and it only shows how good things are when the sport's current champion and one of it's biggest stars is the best signer in the garage.
