I agree that seems to be the case in theory, but for most people I meet, I don't gather there's a big difference. We found Dua Lipa a couple months ago after she'd already been interacting with fans for several minutes, and though I saw her sign a couple things (and believe she had signed several more prior to my friend and I getting there), her tour manager said "no more signatures, just photos." Not sure the reasoning - maybe we looked like eBayers since we were late to the scene and each…

I'm 22 and I usually go for autographs instead of photos, though that is mostly because I feel that photos are more of a hassle for the other person. Autographs maybe take a few seconds while photos take much longer. I don't want to be a nuisance to the person. If the situation is casual and they seem comfortable, then I'll ask if they wouldn't mind doing a photo. I love getting photos, but it's never a priority for me.

For the most part i certainly believe the gap has to be filled before you see the next generation of big artist. I've personally buying albums from bands that wouldn't even get radio play and they dont mind signing, because they havent had every dealer trying to exploit them. For the most part i think autograph collecting has moved towards indie artist , underground artist .

The most collected music related items im seeing that's being collected today, autographs included is from Third man records. It crosses the gens and they just releasrd a singles book about the artist on tmr and funny enough the books have been sogned by whites nephew, Ben blackwell who works in the store, he inscribes them in a funny inscribtion. Everyone is asking for his graph these days.

Some of the behavior of kids who want selfies is a whole other breed of crap. When I went to the Bebe Rexha concert several weeks ago, she asked if any fans knew Nicki Minaj's rap on "No Broken Hearts." She was adamant about no BS - if you were joining her on stage, you had to be able to nail the rap. The first 20-ish douchebag kid gets up on stage and immediately pulls out his phone for a selfie. Bebe sees it and says "Ohhh, no no. That's not what this is." Then she reluctantly agrees, and…

He just wanted to get on stage for a selfie. I thought Bebe was actually going to throw him off the stage. All aspects of rudeness aside, have some damned self respect.
Im in a group on facebook, wh…tag:live.autographmagazine.com,2017-05-07:3524372:Comment:10662232017-05-07T22:03:54.989ZPaulhttps://live.autographmagazine.com/profile/paul332
Im in a group on facebook, where Courtney love turns up live at times for a chat.
Two years ago i obtained an autograph and thd year after i asked for a selfie instead of a graph, just to try the trend.
Autograph collecting will fizzle out because i cant see the mill's putting their phones down.

In my view, the biggest threat to the hobby isn't "selfies" as much as millennials IN GENERAL do not seem to be attracted to collecting. You see this in all the studies... millennials are not as much into the accumulation of physical possessions as previous generations.

A secondary factor is, millennials IN GENERAL do not seems to have a sense of history or much curiosity of what came before them. Everything is in the moment and the past does not hold much value or interest.

I sat in a room with 20 new hires recently... most in the mid to late 20s. These are college educated kids... many with MBAs... and only 2 people knew who Humphrey Bogart was. They don't watch black and white movies. A 29 year old colleague does not know who Bono is.

What are the odds they will want to collect the signatures of long dead people they couldn't care less about? It is frighteningly eye opening.
One thing I should have added…tag:live.autographmagazine.com,2017-05-06:3524372:Comment:10657362017-05-06T14:40:45.414ZRichhttps://live.autographmagazine.com/profile/Rich1

One thing I should have added to the blog was that you can get a feel for this "generational gap" just by looking through the posts on AML. In the music realm, look at the bands discussed by collectors and fans - The Beatles, Elvis, Rolling Stones, Morrison, Floyd, KISS, Springsteen, etc. It's largely all classic rock. Do you ever see many inquiries on Bruno Mars, Paramore or Muse? Even big names of top artists who are now extremely difficult (i.e. back to Florence) are rarely discussed.

I noticed that when Florence Welch started getting stingy on autographs a few, it seemed like she got even stingier on photo ops (not sure if this is still the case). Still, that kind of feels like a rare exception to the rule.

Candids are also something I kind of like. I say "kind of" because they're even more hit or miss with me, and I tend to cringe at seeing myself on video even more than camera. My friend ended up taking candid videos of me with CHVRCHES, Birdy, Broods and Phoebe…

Candids are also something I kind of like. I say "kind of" because they're even more hit or miss with me, and I tend to cringe at seeing myself on video even more than camera. My friend ended up taking candid videos of me with CHVRCHES, Birdy, Broods and Phoebe Ryan last year. A couple of them are kind of amusing and fun to watch, but, again, I find it hard to watch myself. I've found that I really enjoy taking videos of the whole experience. I was wondering about Bishop's meet and greet and what the experience was like for fans, but didn't find much except some Tweets and Instagram posts. So I took video of it myself a few days ago and put it on YouTube for other fans to take a look at if there were on the bubble.

The part about "collecting likes" is pretty spot on. If they don't want money or collectibles, they want attention or status. I get it.
