I don't consider it unethical, many large auction houses "withdraw" an item before the hammer falls. The fee for doing so is justified. IMO.

@Burneggroll, thank you very much.

Learned my lesson here.

It was the first time in years I started an auction at .99 cents and I was not aware of the penalty for ending an auction early.

I paid the price.

I've been criticized for "unethically" ending my auction early, but unlike Ebay sellers of forgeries and shill bidders, I was penalized for my auctions and I accept that and paid the price.

@ Christopher Williams I wish you continued successes. If you are looking for a less hectic way to sell, I suggest Amazon and Bidstart. Neither charges a listing fee. Your only cost is a % when the item sells. BTW - my sky has no limit.

Harsh! I think we strayed off the track a bit. If a seller starts an auction and it doesn't have any bids they may end it early and the listing fee still applies. If a seller starts an auction and it has bid activity and ends the auction early they pay the fee on the price the item was at when it was ended. That is discourage the practice of ending an auction because a seller fears they will not get what they want. And, it does anger the bidders. I believe that is a fair and reasonable…

I also believe, getting off track a bit, that good sellers once they have established a good reputation will sell more at a slightly higher price. Like any business, it's your repeat customers that will take your business to the next level.

As for competing with sellers of forgeries and the shill bidders that they employ, you don't. Those are not your customers. You want knowledgeable buyers that can appreciate your professionalism. Those are the people willing to pay more for real quality. You won't get those customers by playing chicken**** and closing auctions early.

That is a lot of screaming from an "honest seller" engaged in an unethical practice. You entered into a no reserve auction contract with eBay and with your bidders. You cancelling the auction because you didn't like the price result is shameful. By definition, the winner of an auction pays more than anyone else would. And that is not good enough for you? No reserve auctions are not for the faint of heart. You need to have faith in the salesmanship of your ads and understand that most of…
