The “Eisenhower Cabin,” one of ten cabins on the Augusta National property, was built by the golf club’s membership for member Dwight D. Eisenhower after his election as President of the United States. He had joined the club in 1948 and had visited Augusta National five times before his election, 29 times while President, and 11 times after he left office. His stays there were at times lengthy. The cabin was built according to Secret Service security guidelines, and, during his presidency, was adorned by a gold presidential eagle located above the front porch.

A signed photograph of the former President and former First Lady taken after leaving the presidency (the gold presidential eagle was removed after January 20, 1961) captioned “Augusta National” was sent upon request of collectors requesting a signed photograph.

The former President authentically signed “Dwight D. Eisenhower,” but the photograph was signed “Mamie Doud Eisenhower” by Autopen. I do not know if Mamie Doud Eisenhower personally signed any of these photographs between 1961 and 1969 when her husband died almost 50 years ago. I do not know if she used the Autopen at Gettysburg.

Compare these two signed photographs. Up to now, 50 years after these photographs were signed, no one suspected that one of the signatures was Autopen.

In the close-ups, note the space between the “D” of “Dwight” and the “M” of “Mamie” on each photograph. Note where Dwight’s “hower” is penned in the left photograph right above Mamie’s “Eisen” and, on the right photograph, Dwight’s “hower” ends above the upper loop of the “h” in Mamie’s “Eisenhower.” The “Dwight D. Eisenhower” on each photograph is authentic, the “Mamie Doud Eisenhower” is not.

Mamie Doud Eisenhower had an Autopen.
