Hi group...

New to the forum and was excited to see there are some John Lee Hooker people on board.  I have wondered about these signatures since I picked them up.  Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated!

The first piece is a check, which I would normally assume was genuine, but the longer I have this piece, the more JLH checks I come across.

The second piece is on the back of a Service Call card from the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas.  Slightly larger than a typical business card.  Seller claims he got it personally at the Hard Rock.  Claims he met John Lee while waiting for an elevator and this was the only thing he had on him to sign on.

What do ya think?  Thanks greatly for your time and opinion!

Hooker is a hard one to verify as his writing is so rough. One of JLH's former employees is a member here, but I have not seen her post for a while. I will defer to a few of the other Blues folks here for defined opinion. Welcome aboard. Its good to have another Blues person in the forums.

Looking at this further, I would concur with the below that the check looks good. I am also unsure on the card, but Richard has an amazing eye and has helped me on some stuff before so I would defer to his judgement on that second item.

I agree with TB, a VERY hard one to confirm.  Personally I like the cheque but am unsure of the card, it could be right but it's strange enough to give me pause.  However I hasten to add that I haven't studied his autograph enough for my opinion to be worth much!

The check is real. The writing was made out by his assistant and a John signed all the checks.

The card is 100% real in my opinion. I have a few in-person signed items and they match my friend.

as said the check isn't written in johns hand but signed by him

I did him alot

hes very hard verify but the card I'm not in love with, its personal as ive seen a lot cleaner hookers.lol

so it might or might not be.just my 2 cents .

Thanks greatly for your opinions guys!  Good to know at least the check is a solid.  I was in need of a good signature to frame with a John Lee album cover photo and that will work.  The card I did not pay a great deal for, so would not be devastated if it wasn't authentic.

Cheers,

~bart

Here’s JLH’s Gibson Guitar contract I own, which has a good signature for comparison.

Thanks Richard for that example!  The signature on your contract was from 95’ and the signature on my check was from 94’.  They do look very similar.  I don’t remember when the card was signed, but based on the contract and check signature, I would guess around that same timeframe.

i have seen some other JLH signatures, such as these authenticated and/or posted by Lynn, his former assistant, that are actually legible.  I am guessing because they were from a much earlier part of his life???

JLH signatures are very varied... The signatures that Lynn obtained were all signed in a unhurried situation. In-person meetings usually were slightly rushed. I have seen him just signing JLH at times.

I have around 25 signatures in my collection from John, some rushed and some very clear indeed. It all depended on situation for his signing habits.

Yours are great examples for any great Blues collection!

Here is a great signature I own from John, complete with guitar sketch! Rarely did he do this and I have only seen a handful of others. One of his sketches was made into a limited edition signed and numbered prints in the 90’s also.

Thanks for sharing that piece Richard!  That is just way, way cooool.  I think its a good thing he labeled his drawing as being a guitar.  I can't say that would be my first guess if I saw the drawing alone.  I love it...
