Hi I'm new here and just recently acquired a book from ebay possibly with Nelson Mandela's signature in it signed with felt tip marker. It's called Madiba: Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela A Celebration. It's a look through of his life and the inscription inside says it was presented during a De Beers golf tournament in 1999 to support his Children's fund. However I couldn't find much about this book or the event online. I also read here that ebay and abebooks has sold forged books before. I was wondering if any of you could help me authenticate this or who I should go to. I'm willing to spend some on appraising it. Just don't know where to start. Let me know if i need more pics or info.

Thanks for your time!

That's very interesting. This is the best pic I got of the vid. I'm no Mandela expert so hopefully someone here can chime in. I definitely see similarities but it looks mirrored.

Hello, GC asked me to take a peek - I don't know the signature but what I do see in the glare is a lot of odd splotches and stops/starts etc. Look at the last "a". I don't know what signed this but I do not think it was human.

thanks very much for your input my friend

Thank you for all your help goodcat! Hope to see you in the future. I really like this forum. Very helpful. I think if i decide to get an authentic mandela I'll go for the signed dates as well :)

Thank you for your input Eric! I think it's looking more like autopen to me.

It does seem to be the conclusion here as James initially stated

Can you apply for a refund thru Amazon?

$150 is pretty darn cheap for an authentic Mandela I would think

It was actually an eBay auction. The seller stated it was valued at $900. So I pounced at that auction and was happy it sold for $150. Think i got dooped. Oh well lesson learned.

I think you did get dooped too

Who would accept $150 for a $900 valued item

You can still apply for refund at ebay

That is true I would have put a reserve price on it. What still gets me is that abebooks is selling the same 'signed' book for $890

Abe books is a reliable source and priced at market values

I would be confident in that the Abe book is 100% authentic

Can you post a photo of that signature here for comparison?

That's good to hear! I just went to the site and there's no image. Here's the link: https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=18454720422&s...

Their description of the book seems to match what I have: First Edition. Signed. Signed by Nelson Mandela in felt tip pen on raised plate on front free endpaper The plate thanks the first owner of the book for contributing to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, and reads "Thank you for supporting my Children's Fund. With best wishes N Mandela. Founder and Chairperson".

So I'm just wondering why one book has a real sig and mine is autopen. Did the ebay seller forge my version?

more than likely someone purchased an unsigned book and added the signature with autopen

It's a pretty common scam

nothing is out of reach for the forgers today

well maybe officially licensed signed lithographs... those are pretty safe for the most part
