Has anyone ever heard of “The Scoreboard” authentication company? I thought I read somewhere they were not a legitimate authentication company. Anyone with an opinion. Attached is one of their COA’s.

They were a very reputable company. If you look at the top of this page you will see Goldin Auctions which is headed by Ken Goldin the President of Scoreboard. The COA’s were easily copied and there is a possibility the COA doesn’t match the item.

Scoreboard was a legitimate company.  The problem is, similar to Steiner and others, their COA's have been copied over and over again, to try to give credibility to forgeries.   I have an original Joe D signed ball with an original Scoreboard cert and the actual invoice from Scoreboard for the sale.

As already stated, Scoreboard was a very legitimate company.  They were not an authentication company as you mentioned.  They provided a certificate of authenticity with their products.  It was a simple small piece of  thicker stock paper.  Since this was at the beginning of certificates of authenticity, they weren’t prepared for the crooks who made photocopies and started flooding the market with forgeries.

As others have stated, Scoreboard was legit; they conducted many private signings. They were Steiner before Steiner. But their simple COAs have been copied and used to sell fakes over the years.

Scoreboard was active primarily in the 1990s, before Cristiano Ronaldo was famous. I'd be surprised if Scoreboard ever did a signing with him. Likely fake based on this alone.

Wow! Thanks to everyone for their replies. I joined this platform to learn about autograph authentication, and so far, I’ve learned quite a bit from all of you. Please try to remember, I’m 60 and collected well before there were auto card inserts and auto authentication and all the stuff that collectors need to be aware of these days. Thanks again everyone!

Scoreboard was not an "authentication" company and they never sold forgeries.

The problem is the scammers over the years have edited, copied, etc. the old Scoreboard COA to sell their forgeries.

Do a Google search on the below and you will find a few of my blogs on that subject.

COA Not Scoreboard Derek Jeter

Thank you, Eric.

Sure Christopher, what you wrote is exactly what I remember seeing.

The thousands of buyers who have purchased forgeries with a copied/edited Scoreboard COA is beyond my comprehension.

the other downside is that the legitimate Scoreboard items have been devalued because of the flood of counterfeit certs.   People just associate Scoreboard with forgeries now.  Sad.

Great point and observation, Terrier.
