This is clearly fake I can't believe Beckett guarantees it!

Sorry, I'm not trying to be dense but I still don't understand how something can be "pre-certified" (by Beckett's service) and yet not have been looked at by the ones doing the "pre-certification" (Beckett).  I honestly thought it meant that it had been examined, was passed by Beckett and then there was an option of purchasing a full LOA.

Hi Etienne,

From the auction text - nothing about "precertification". It is Iconic making a guarantee:

"...Iconic Auctions guarantees this item to pass authentication by Beckett Authentication Services (BAS). Full certification for this item can be acquired for an additional fee. Please contact our offices at 1-800-325-7127 or email us at Info@IconicAuctions.com for pricing and details...."

Eric -  OK......looks like I mixed up auction houses.  So items at Iconic have not been examined by Beckett but are guaranteed to "pass" Beckett at a future time.  I guess it's important to read the fine print carefully!

RR Auctions have a different approach which apparently means items have been examined but no Letter will be issued unless you pay an addition fee:

This item is pre-certified by Beckett

Buy a third-party letter of authenticity for $75.00

*This item has been pre-certified by a trusted third-party authentication service, and by placing a bid on this item, you agree to accept the opinion of this authentication service. If you wish to have an opinion rendered by a different authenticator of your choosing, you must do so prior to your placing of any bid. RR Auction is not responsible for differing opinions submitted 30 days after the date of the sale.

"...I guess it's important to read the fine print carefully!..."

Always my friend. It's nice to know if the house is bidding and things like that! :)

Righto!  The best approach as a bidder is to know what you are looking at (study, study, study) and calculate what you are willing to pay after all of the dust clears from buyer's premiums, taxes, shipping, convenience charges, etc..

so its my understanding that Iconic guarantees it will pass Beckett(they havent looked at it yet)

So have Beckett look at it, and if they fail it, you get refunded right??  Seems simple enough

That's apparently true of items that have not been previously certified by another TPA.  I was looking at Iconic's listings, and many pieces have LOAs from JSA, PSA and REAL.  Yet the ones that don't have this kind of prior authentication are stated to be guaranteed to pass Beckett (the others are not mentioned as possibilities).  I think I'd seek clarification to know if the others (besides Beckett) can be used and accepted post auction as well.

No, if the item has an LOA from PSA, JSA, or REAL it does not come with a guarantee to pass Beckett. You'd have to send it to them after you won the auction and if they reject it, Iconic does not have to give you a refund.

so if you win a 5k or 10k piece would you not want it to pass all of the 3 rd party authenticators?

It is confusing.  The way I read it Iconic uses only Beckett if you want to pay the extra fee for certification after you win something and guarantees it will pass.  I assume if it doesnt the sale is invalidated I assume.  If you want to use an outside TPA, though what happens if it fails?  That is what is not clear to me.  I trust Beckett as much as the others, but the whole concept is strange.

it is misleading and done so on purpose as the owner of Iconic Jeff Woolf is a scammer and a conman in my opinion, I would be very careful to do business with him..

its authentic
