I'm betting several things happened in this daisy-chain, echoing what another member here said:

1) S&S/Dylan decide to go the "signed book" route. Dylan's management and/or Dylan, for whatever reason, decide to go the autopen route. Either he's too miffed, thinks he's not getting a big enough cut, or his team decides to keep him out of the process.

2) S&S sends limitation pages to Dylan. They get "signed" and sent back, with no one the wiser. S&S plays this up with a special signed limited edition branding -- but no one takes the bait except Indigo, who didn't know any better/didn't realize it.

3) "Signed" books go through the system, people freak out and the whole plan would have gone out without a hitch... except for the pesky distribution centre/store that inadvertantly let a copy/copies go out into the wild early.

4) The jig is up, and after Indigo looks into it, they realize they've been had just like Gretzky.

It's not a good look for anyone, really. The fact that Indigo was the only retailer to even offer the books in the first place makes me think knowledge of this issue was known amongst the other U.S. book retailers.

The irony is that the "autopenned" versions will probably carry a weird premium due to having a different design/scarcity -- just not in the same way Dylan or his team intended.

These were 100% autopenned. From Indigo:

"The publisher and artist have decided to shift directions with this limited signed edition. It has been cancelled for sale at Indigo and will not be available through any North American retailer at this moment."

Good on them for taking action when they were able to confirm that these were autopenned.

just got the same cancellation form

Props to everyone making a big enough stink on this one. All in all, well handled by Indigo and the publisher.

"It has been cancelled for sale at Indigo and will not be available through any North American retailer at this moment"

Does this mean coming soon to Waterstones, Coles, Hatchards, Blackwells, WH Smith, or some other European outlet?

I just find the wording very interesting.

Different publisher in Europe

Unlikely... they probably just can't speak to what another publisher will do.
