I've seen several, possibly authentic, borderline Macca signatures being discussed lately. I find this pursuit of authenticity an interesting aspect of the hobby. So much depends on accuracy.

Here are two examples of Paul McCartney signatures I have owned in the past. Both were originally obtained from reliable sources. Roger Epperson approved one and disapproved the other.

Would like members to give their opinion, if you will. Are both authentic? If only one, which one? Or are both questionable, at best?

Just thought I would add. I believe both these were/are genuine when I purchased them. I still believe so. Although, as TPA services gain more and more influence in the hobby, we need to be alert to their determinations. An authentic example can costly if a TPA will not back it up with the paperwork collectors love to have included.

For better or worse, that's the direction the hobby is heading. And it's a factor that must be considered when making a purchasing decision.

Black likely genuine, blue not.. or rather not very desirable anyway even if rushed example which it may also be

The one in black looks good to me. I don't think McCartney signed the one in blue.

I agree, the black is good.  The blue is highly questionable, although, just may be a "rushed" signature.

the blue is 100 percent real

and signed on a very rare itiem

McCartney signatures gnaw at me. The variations are many and virtually all signatures are obtained in person in rushed circumstances. As I stated earlier, I personally believe both of these, and many others, are not typical. But does that render them less than authentic?

Unfortunately, collectors in today's world are becoming more dependent on TPA services to confirm authenticity in order to successfully sell their signatures when it's time. These "borderline signatures" can become a costly albatross.

As TPS services become more and more influential I believe they will become more and more conservative. They are highly aware that any mistake, real or perceived, leaves a blemish on their reputation. These borderline autographs become a casualty of the process.

And the casualty list is growing.

I agree Joe.  John Shaw is more confident than I on the blue one.  It may, in fact, be real but just sloppy.  Luckily, when "borderline" signatures of any Beatle come up, I feel, that at least we can get definitive more concrete opinions from the likes of Caiazzo, Paul Wane and Perry Cox.  Unfortunately we will have to rely on TPS services for other borderline signatures outside of the Beatle area. It is true, I am seeing more and more non-committal responses for many atypical signatures too.

I don't know if Tracks will issue a LOA for autographs that are not theirs. But, from my understanding, Frank and Perry will not unless it's consigned/sold to them. Doesn't help much for individual collectors wanting their signatures verified. Also, I have heard that some authenticators will privately say they think a signature is genuine but would never issue a LOA on it. Again, not good for the collector.

That's one thing I like about Phil Sears. We will authentic Disney for collectors at a fair price and let you know in advance if it has the possibility of being genuine without the cost of a full authentication.

As I said the blue one is 100 percent real and signed inperson

John, I'm confused.  Joe listed these as obtained by a "reliable source".  You stated that the blue was 100% real.  I assumed that was just an opinion.  Now you say that it was signed "in person".  Do you, or did you, own these ?  Are you saying it was signed in your presence ?  Please clarify... thanks

As I said the blue is one percent real done in person.  I saw it with my own eyes

John, obviously we weren't there and very odd autographs are possible on the fly. Do you know of any similar odd ones you can you can get images for? It's an educational discussion.
